Unit 34.

My way or the highway

The text main idea is to show how humanity in general manage the fact that we all are different in
a lot of aspects.

So the text mention that there is no way to beat around the bush that we have taken to the
extreme our physical, social, political and cultural differences and as a result we are facing now
serious issues with racism, sexism, homophobia, segregation, discrimination and in general hatred
among the different communities around the world. And even though there is a very spread and
strong campaign against these thing it seems that it is not giving results.

Also the text mentions that there is a lack of a real support coming from the people in general for
those communities that are being discriminated and that we all are conscious about this it seems
that we are afraid to go out on a limp and do something useful for these communities maybe
because we prefer and we feel more comfortable hanging out with the “in-crowd” people.

And finally the reading concludes that the fact that we all are different makes us have chances to
be discriminated for whatever reason.

In my opinion as the text says the problem is that we have taken our differences to the extremes, I
think that in the right proportions, pointing each other differences has nothing wrong, it is ok. For
example, among a group of friends it is very common to make fun of the particular characteristics
of themselves, and it is ok (fun) but when we let that go further and become hatred. So it is upon
us whether take our differences in a good way or take them to the point of hatred.
