OVERVIEW

One of the function of a nurse as a change agent in the community is to work effectively with
groups. However, there are many barriers in accomplishing certain goal some of which may include socio-
cultural and individual values. To address this issue the nurse should act as a facilitator to gain the
participation of people in the community. Community involvement is the main focus of the different
programs in the community. As a student nurse you should in one way or another take part in
accomplishing this goal.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

After reading this module the student will be able to:

1. Identify ways on how to promote community involvement.


2. Discuss solutions in resolving conflict within the group.

DEVELOPMENT

STAGES OF GROUP DEVELOPMENT:

1. The Stage of Orientation

 Determine a way of achieving the primary tasks


 Find a place for themselves in a group
 Discuss topics with substantial interest to serve as vehicles to explore
how they are perceived by co-members

2. Stage of Conflict
 Characterized by the group concern’s over dominance, control and
power
 The struggle for control is part of the dynamics of every group

 To overcome the anxiety that the members experience at this stage,


counter-dependent expressions (fight) begin to replace the over-
dependency stage.

3. Stage of Cohesiveness
 There is an increase of morale and mutual trust as members feel group
belongingness
 Members are willing to share more about themselves to others in the
group
 The chief concern of the group is with intimacy and closeness
 There is intensification of personal involvement, a growing awareness
and mutual recognition of the significance of the group experience in
 terms of personality growth and change

4. The Work Group Stage

 The uniqueness of the members and the leaders are seen and expected
 Members can accept one another’s differences
 They become aware of their own involvement
 The group becomes a feedback vehicle where members can clarify and
evaluate each other perceptions and the group process

5. The Termination Stage


 The tasks of the group at this stage are finishing agenda, establishing
key decisions and completing the group product, tying up loose ends and
writing of unfinished business

INTERVENTIONS TO FACILITATE GROUP GROWTH

1. ORIENTATION, STRUCTURE, DIRECTION


 During this stage the level of anxiety can be decreased by helping
provide the necessary orientation, structure and direction to the
group
 There is a great positive impact on group members if they got to
introduce by the leader or facilitator
 Opportunities to clarify on the goals and purposes of the group, the
expectations and perceptions of every members as regards to roles
and responsibilities should be maximized
 The facilitator or leader creates an atmosphere for productive group
work when members interpersonal needs are met to a satisfactory
degree for each one
 Helping group members meet their interpersonal needs to belong
and to be part of the group can be encouraged by acknowledging the
importance of their presence in the group and contributions they
make
 The leader tasks and techniques may include
 Listen attentively to what each is saying
 Not judging to what others are saying
 Doing away with preaching, teaching or moralizing
 Avoiding members into participation before they are ready
o The leader can encourage productive participation by:
 Observing for signs of a members efforts to be heard and
giving her opportunity to contribute
 Being sensitive in identifying those eager to talk
 Encouraging and supporting all members who participate
 Summarizing and clarifying the contributions
 Not monopolyzing the discussion or commenting too
frequently

2. PROCESS, NEGOTIATE AND RESOLVE CONFLICTS

Interventions to handle conflicts:

1. Understand the nature of conflicts.


 Conflict stimulates interest and curiosity and increase the
motivation and energy of group members

 It can greatly reduce the natural tension and frustration of


working together
 Conflicts bring information to members about where they are,
what is important to each of them, how the group work can be
made effective and how their relationships can improved

2. Conflict resolution through the problem-solving approach


 A conflict can be analyzed, negotiated, and resolve using the
problem-solving approach
a. Clarify the basic rules
b. Diagnose the causes of the conflicts
c. Explore ways to settle conflicts
d. Decide upon and implement an agreement that is
satisfactorily to all members
e. Evaluate the success of the action taken

3. Generating the new ways of looking at the situation or problem


 During experiences of frustrations and dead ends brought about
by the groups incapability to handle conflicts, the nurse as a
facilitator of group growth can help the members look at the
situations or data from various perspectives such that new
orientations and insights can be derived from them.
 The facilitator can encourage group members to have available
diverse ideas that can be flexibly put together into new and varied
patterns.

4. Helping members analyze the here-and-now experience


 Focus on the feelings and experiences of the members in the
present moment, in the here-and-now

3. AWARENESS OF THE EFFECTS OF BEHAVIOR

 Use of self for group growth


 The nurse as a facilitator or coordinator of group discussion exerts
an influence on the behavior and experience of group members.
 The facilitator acts as a model of the groups as regards behavior that
is expected or acceptable
 Must follow the group’s decision to dominate group life
 It is vital that the facilitator becomes aware of her own behavior and
its effects on the group.

4. APPLICATION OF NEW LEARNING

 Group experiences provide varied learning opportunities for


members
 The basic concepts and principles for effective group life are re-lived
in various group experiences
 Members gain more depth in understanding group process as they
realize that the concepts and principles previously learned in
handling a particular issue can be applied in another situation dealing
with a different issue.

EVALUATION

Activity

You are assigned to be the leader/facilitator in the younger group in your community to be part of
the campaign against dengue fever, as a leader your task is to form a group of individual who are
willing to be part of it. Present your output by answering the following questions:

1. How will you encourage individual to actively participate in the group activity?
2. What will be your interventions if conflict arises during the group formation?
3. What techniques will you initiate to prevent blocks and barriers to group progress?
