1 Introduction

1.1 What is EAL?

Environmentally acceptable lubricants (EAL) are described by US Environmental
Protection Agency (US EPA) as “lubricants that have been demonstrated to meet
standards for biodegradability, toxicity and bioaccumulation potential that minimize their
likely adverse consequences in the aquatic environment, compared to conventional
lubricants.”

1.2 Why using EAL?

Environmental awareness and maritime legislation and codes (US EPA, Polar code) call
for the use of EAL in thrusters where there is an oil to water interface.

1.3 Application of EAL in existing equipment

Using EAL in a thruster system introduces different requirements for some of the
materials and components used in the thruster system compared to using mineral oil.
For thrusters with a product reference type listed on the frontpage of this bulletin, Wärtsilä
can engineer a project specific solution to convert an existing thruster to make it suitable
to operate with EAL.

2 EAL conversion

2.1 Materials for EAL conversion

To install the materials to make a thruster EAL compatible an overhaul of the equipment
is required. Not only materials in the outboard part need to be changed, but inboard parts
are also subject to changes. It is most convenient to apply an EAL conversion during a
scheduled maintenance/dry-docking period.
The following components are included in the scope of supply for an EAL conversion:
• EAL compatible O-rings, seals, gaskets and breathers
• Oil pumps and filters
• New header tank or header tank components
• New powerpack or powerpack components (for thrusters with CPP)
• Wärtsilä EnduraPac water separator (optional)
Project specific solutions always include installation and commissioning.

2.2 Wärtsilä EnduraPac water separator

For reliable operation of a thruster, it is important to maintain the quality of a lubricant.
When using an EAL, the water content must be as low as possible to prevent
deterioration of the oil quality. To remove water from the EAL, it is recommended to
connect a water separator to the thruster.

CONFIDENTIAL PROP95TB133, Issue 1, Page 4 / 6

Wärtsilä recommends installing a Wärtsilä EnduraPac, a combined filter-separator that

removes water, salt and particles from oil.

2.3 Monitoring the condition of EAL

An EAL has different properties and behaves differently than a mineral oil. Therefore,
EAL has different rules for condition monitoring. How to analyse and monitor the
condition of the EAL is described in service bulletin Prop95SL035 - Monitoring the
condition of the Environmentally Acceptable Lubricant (EAL).

2.4 Ordering parts

For the EAL conversion of an existing thruster, project specific engineering is required
and materials must be purchased. A minimum total lead time of 8 months for engineering
and parts is to be considered.
The long lead time is because of current supply chain issues.

2.5 Benefits of an EAL conversion

• Compliance with US EPA and Polar Code requirements for lubricants
• Improved oil quality when Wärtsilä EnduraPac is installed
• Smaller environmental footprint

2.6 EAL Compliance Certificate

In case an EAL upgrade is performed by using original Wärtsilä parts in a Wärtsilä
workshop or, in a local workshop, under the supervision of a Wärtsilä Field Service
Engineer a certificate can be issued (on request). This document proves that the thruster
has been upgraded with EAL compatible materials and is suitable to operate with EAL.

3 Solutions for other thruster product types

3.1 TT-FT/xxx
For the product type FT/125-150-175-200-225-250-275-300 (transverse thruster with a
fixed pitch propeller), Wärtsilä has developed an EAL upgrade kit. This solution is
communicated through service bulletin Prop95TB107.

3.2 Other product types

For product reference types and related product types listed in the table below, an EAL
upgrade is not feasible.
On request, Wärtsilä can make a Technical Infeasibility Statement for a product that
cannot be converted to EAL compatible. For an infeasibility statement please raise a
TechRequest.
