7. Determination of molecular weight of polyvinyl alcohol using
Ostwald viscometer
Materials required
1. Polymer material
2. Solvent
3. Viscometer
4. 50 ml std. flask
5. 20 ml graduated pipette
6. Stop watch.
(i) Molecular weight of the polymer
Mark - Hownik equation is given by

(ii) D egree of polymerization = Number of repeating units in a polymer
chain

Note the time of flow for the solvent using Ostwald viscometer. Also note
the flow time for different concentration of polymer solution.
