The Weight due to Gravity Equation

" Fw " is the object' s weight

" m" is the object' s mass " g " is the gravity " i.e. acceleration" of a particular planet

Remember weight is a force due to the pull of gravity!!

1) The mass of a person is 70 kg. What is the weight of this person on Earth? a. What does the problem ask you to find? _______________ (include units!) Fw = ______________ m = _____________ b. What is the equation you will use? ________________ g = ____________

c. Work the problem out (write the equation with numbers and solve for the unknown): d. What is the answer? (INCLUDING UNITS!!) __________________________________ 2) A car weighs about 1000 N on Earth. What is the mass of the car? a. What does the problem ask you to find? _______________ (include units!) Fw = ______________ m = _____________ b. What is the equation you will use? ________________ g = ____________

c. Work the problem out (write the equation with numbers and solve for the unknown): d. What is the answer? (INCLUDING UNITS!!) __________________________________ 3) If the car from the above problem was moved to the Moon where the acceleration due to gravity is 1.67 m/s2, what would be the weight of the car? Fw = ______________ m = _____________ g = ____________

4) An astronaut has a mass of 100 kg and a weight of 373 N on a new planet. What would be the acceleration due to gravity on this planet? Fw = ______________ m = _____________ g = ____________

5) Mars has an acceleration due to gravity of 3.67 m/s2. If a baseball has a mass of 0.15 kg, how much would the baseball weigh? (Dont forget the UNITS!) Fw = ______________ m = _____________ g = ____________

6) If you have a mass of 90 kg and on Jupiter you have a weight of 2335.5 N, what is the acceleration due to gravity on Jupiter? Fw =___________ m =___________ g =___________
