• CAT stands for computer-assisted translation.

• CAT tools are also know as translation memory tools or translation technology.
• Main features of CAT tools include:
 Integrated software environment with most of what a translator needs for a translation work.
 Translation memory: a database for pairs of source and target sentences.
 Term base: a database containing terms related to specific subjects, products, customers or users.
 Quality control module: a process checking for machine detectable errors in a translation.
 Preview pane to check work during translation.
 Spell checking.

• CAT tools differ from machine translation in a way that the former involves human’s efforts during translation,

Translation environment
• Include 4 areas
 Ribbon: stands at the top and consists of commands.
 Translation grid: where translators translate. The left column is for the source document, the right one is
for the translation.
 Translation results table: where translators can find translation suggestions from different databases (i.e.
translation memory, term bases, alignments of previously translated documents, etc.).
 Preview pane: where translators can visualize how their translation will look like after translation

Translation memory
• A collection of source and target segment pairs from previous translation work.
• Translators can choose to use one/multiple translation memories per translation project.
• Matches, which are segments from previous works similar to the working segments, and the level of match
(indicated by percentage) are shown in the translation results table:
 100% match: segments are the same.
 101% match: segments and their context are the same.
 Repetitions: one segment is repeated again in the document.
 Fuzzy matching: matches are not exact.

Using consistent terminology

• CAT tools allow translators to select preferred term base to work with.
• Translation results table shows matches at different levels of working document and previous projects and
within one document.
→ Ensure accuracy and consistency of terminology in a project.

• Translators do not always receive projects in formats that can be opened in a program like Microsoft Word
or Excel.
• CAT tools are able to handle numerous file formats such as .docx, .xlsx, .html, or even more complicated

• With CAT tools, translators do not need to care about formatting.
• Numerous clients or language service providers require translators to use CAT tools.

• CAT tools are of great importance when doing translation; but it may take time for translators, especially
independent freelancers, to realise this.
• There are numerous CAT software and platforms on the market which are suitable for different types of jobs
and users. Translators must take into consideration the pros and cons of each tool, as well as the clients’
preference when choosing which tool to use.

Các phần mềm hỗ trợ người dịch trong quá trình dịch thuật và lưu trữ để tối ưu hóa thời gian và hiệu suất
công việc.
• Machine translation (n): dịch tự động, dich máy
Dịch từ một ngôn ngữ sang một hoặc nhiều ngôn ngữ đích một cách tự động, không có sự can thiệp của con
người trong quá trình dịch
• Translation memory (n): bộ nhớ dịch
Một cơ sở dữ liệu lưu trữ các phân đoạn (segment), có thể là các câu, đoạn văn hoặc các đơn vị giống câu đã
được dịch trước đó, để hỗ trợ người dịch.
• Quality control (n): kiểm soát chất lượng
Một tính năng trong các công cụ CAT có khả năng nhận diện lỗi trong bản dịch, ví dụ như lỗi lặp từ, dịch thiếu số,

1. Người dịch tự do có nên sử dụng các công cụ CAT không?

→ Có. Các công cụ CAT giúp người dịch dịch nhanh hơn và năng suất hơn. Hai lợi ích người dịch có thể nhận thấy
ngay lập tức là các công cụ CAT không chỉ hiển thị những thuật ngữ có trong bộ nhớ dịch, mà còn hiển thị thuật
ngữ đã được dịch trong cùng văn bản, giúp đảm bảo tính nhất quán. Thứ hai, khi sử dụng công cụ CAT, người
dịch không cần lo ngại về vấn đề format của bản dịch.

2. Người dịch tự do nên mua phần mềm CAT như Trados và Wordfast hay sử dụng các nền tảng trực tuyến?
→ Người dịch tự do thường sử dụng Trados hoặc Wordfast vì những phần mềm này đã có đầy đủ chức năng hỗ trợ

4. Các công cụ CAT có dễ sử dụng không?

→ Có. Phần lớn các công cụ CAT có giao diện dễ sử dụng. Ngoài ra, các nhà cung cấp cũng có hướng dẫn
chi tiết cho từng công đoạn khi sử dụng công cụ CAT như cách nhập và xuất bộ nhớ dịch, cách nhập văn
bản gốc và xuất bản dịch,... Tuy nhiên, vẫn có một số công cụ có giao diện khá cơ bản và không có nhiều
tính năng hỗ trợ.

5. Phần mềm Trados và Wordfast có thể sử dụng ở những hệ điều hành nào?
→ Wordfast có cả phiên bản cho hệ điều hành Microsoft và iOS, nhưng Trados chỉ có phiên bản dành cho
Microsoft. Dù vậy, người dùng macbook có thể sử dụng nền tảng online của Trados.
