Year and Div.: TE (A/B) Subject: DTS

Q.1. Explain the standard system of gear tooth.

Q.2. The following data is given for a pair of spur gear with 20o full depth involute teeth Zp=18,
Zg=36, m=5 mm, b=50 mm. Pinion having steel material with Sut=600 N/mm2, BHN=330 and gear
having steel material with Sut=510 N/mm2 and BHN = 280. Take FOS=2 np= 1440 rpm find beam
strength and Wear strength, if Y=0.484-2.87/Z and Cv=5.6/(5.6+√V)

Q.3. Write the assumptions consider for beam Strength of Spur Gear. Derive an expression for beam
strength of spur gear tooth.

Q.4. The following data is given for a pair of spur gear with 20o full depth involute teeth Zp=24,
Zg=56, Np = 720rpm, m=3 mm, Cs= 1.5 b=30 mm Both gears are made of steel material with Sut =
600N/mm2. By using velocity factor is in account Find i) Beam strength, ii) Velocity factor, iii) rated
power if FOS=1.5, Y =0.337

Q.5. The following data is given for a pair of spur gear with 20o full depth involute teeth Zp=19,
Zg=40, m=4 mm, b=40 mm. Both gears are made of steel material with Sut=600 N/mm2, Power
transmitted kW=7.5 at np= 1500 rpm Find FOS for bending if Y = 0.314

ASSIGNMENT-II

Department: Mechanical Academic Year: 2023-2024 Semester: II

Year and Div.: TE (A/B) Subject: DTS

Q.1. Why worm and worm wheel are made of dissimilar material?

Q.2 Explain overhauling and self-locking conditions for worm gearing?

Q.3 A pair of bevel gears, with 20° pressure angle, consists of a 20 teeth pinion meshing with
a 30 teeth gear. The module is 4 mm, while the face width is 20 mm. The material for the
pinion and gear is steel 50C4 (Sut = 750 N/mm2). The gear teeth are lapped and ground
(Class-3) and the surface hardness is 400 BHN. The pinion rotates at 500 rpm and receives
2.5 kW power from the electric motor. The starting torque of the motor is 150% of the rated
torque. Determine the factor of safety against bending failure and against pitting failure. Take
Y=0.33712
Q.4. A pair of worm gear drive is designated as 1/30/10/8. Calculate, i) Centre Distance; ii)
Speed reduction; iii) Dimensions of worm and wheel.

ASSIGNMENT-III

Department: Mechanical Academic Year: 2023-2024 Semester: II

Year and Div.: TE (A/B) Subject: DTS

Q.1. It is required to select ball bearing suitable for 50 mm diameter shaft rotating at 1500
rpm. The radial and thrust load on bearing are 4500N and 1600N respectively. The value of X
and Y factor are 0.56 and 1.2 respectively. Select a ball bearing from the following table for
the rating life of 22,500 hr.

Bearing No. 6010 6210 6310 6410

C in ‘N’ 21,600 35,100 61,800 87,100

Q.2. Explain Raimondi and Boyd method.

Q.3. A system involves four identical ball bearings, each subjected to a radial load of 2500 N.
The reliability of the system, i.e., one out of four bearings failing during the lifetime of five
million revolutions, is 82%. Determine the dynamic load carrying capacity of the bearing, so
as to select it from the manufacturer’s catalogue based on 90% reliability

Q.4. Why is hydrostatic bearing called ‘externally pressurized’ bearing?

Q.5. A ball bearing is operating on a work cycle consisting of three parts- a radial load of 3
KN at 1440 rpm for one quarter cycle, 5 KN at 720 rpm for one half cycle, and 2.5 KN at
1440 rpm for the remaining cycle. The expected life of bearing is 10,000 hr. calculate the
dynamic load carrying capacity of the bearing.

Q.6. Explain Raimondi and Boyd method.
