Preface
Effective communication begins with listening. Only when you listen to others
and understand their perspectives can you make informed choices about what
to say. Whether you’re listening to your instructor in class or to a friend on
Skype or to a family member who needs your help and support, listening is one
of your most essential life skills.
Listening: Attitudes, Principles, and Skills, Sixth Edition introduces you
to the HURIER model, a behavioral approach to listening improvement that
serves as a unifying framework for understanding and developing your lis-
tening skills. This model suggests that listening is a system of interrelated
components that include both mental processes and observable behaviors. The
six skill areas, or components, include: hearing, understanding, remembering,
interpreting, evaluating, and responding.

The world is rapidly changing and your communication challenges are becom-
ing more complex. Never before have there been so many options and opportu-
nities for individuals to express themselves, and so many demands on listeners
seeking to make sense out of increasingly complicated communication situ-
ations. Listening, Sixth Edition recognizes this new listening environment
by further expanding those topics most critical to listening effectiveness and
by adding new material that is both timely and relevant. Ethical issues, for
instance, have become more prevalent and more complicated, requiring listen-
ers to consider a wide range of options and perspectives.
One of the key factors that is changing the way we relate to others is the
explosion of mediated communication, particularly social media. Young peo-
ple are continuously connected, through cell phones and online, with expec-
tations for immediate responses and without the cues traditionally used by
listeners to ensure shared meanings. Given this new framework, definitions of
listening need to be continuously revisited and reassessed. While we have no
clear or definitive answers yet, this edition identifies and addresses many of
these emerging issues and provides new information throughout to stimulate
further thought and discussion.
In addition to our increasing dependence on communication technology,
demographic transitions are also affecting listening requirements. The number
of older adults needing compassion and care has risen, and intergenerational
households are consequently on the rise. This edition addresses in greater
detail some of the variables that affect seniors’ communication challenges and
provides guidance for the people who listen to them.
Many “In the News” cases and activities have been replaced with current
events that will be familiar to today’s young adults. A new feature in the activi-
ties section is a personal journal assignment which culminates in Chapter 10
with instruction for goal setting and continued personal development. Readers
can also expect to have updated text and source material throughout.
Organization of the Text
Listening: Attitudes, Principles, & Skills is organized into three parts: an intro-
duction, chapters that address individual components of the HURIER listening
model, and two final chapters that discuss listening relationships and chal-
lenges. Each chapter includes an applications section that encourages you to
think about and apply what you have learned. Through self-assessments, cases,
discussion questions, and group exercises, these activities provide opportuni-
ties for you to practice and discuss the ideas presented in each chapter.
Chapter 1 introduces you to the HURIER model and emphasizes the impor-
tance of listening in your increasingly global, fast-paced environment. Lis-
tening improvement requires motivation. Unless you are ready to work at
increasing your effectiveness, it will be difficult to realize significant changes
in your performance. At the end of the chapter is a self-assessment inventory
that you can use to individualize your listening instruction. A set of questions
corresponds to each component of the HURIER model. By analyzing the
results of this assessment and by creating a personal listening profile, you can
quickly identify the areas in which you feel most comfortable as well as those
that may need improvement.
Chapter 2 places listening within the larger context of what is called rela-
tional communication. Both the communication process and the individual lis-
tener are viewed as systems of interrelated components. Although the chapter
focuses on the individual listener, an understanding of relational communica-
tion is a prerequisite to appreciating the central role that listening plays in
human communication. New listening challenges associated with social media
and other communication technologies, contexts that remain largely unex-
plored, are raised for consideration. An overview of listening research and the
underlying assumptions of the HURIER model are also discussed.
Each of the six chapters in Part II, Principles and Applications, presents con-
cepts and skills related to one component of the HURIER model. An extended
case highlights the main points of each chapter and is used to clarify key con-
cepts as they are discussed. The applications section begins with a review of
the relevant questions from the listening self-assessment instrument so that
you can identify areas of particular concern. Although the six components are

interrelated, by identifying your specific listening needs you can focus your
attention on the most relevant topics.
The final component of the listening process is responding. In relational
listening situations, the quality of your listening is indicated by the appropri-
ateness of your response. In determining the nature of this response, two con-
siderations are key—communication purpose and the communication context.
Effective listening requires more than the simple acquisition of attitudes,
knowledge, and skills. It also implies that your newly acquired behaviors will
be applied wisely—at the right time and in the right situation. Responsible
listeners use sound judgment in deciding what skills to apply to various listen-
ing situations. A model is provided that draws attention to the importance of
listening purpose and context in developing your specific listening strategy.
The third and final section of the text examines a variety of listening rela-
tionships and provides guidelines suggesting the most appropriate listening
behaviors for each situation. The last chapter introduces challenges that arise
for listeners as they confront continuous change, globalization, and high-
technology environments. The listening challenges created by gender are also
discussed. Finally, you are asked to consider the challenge of ethical listening
and the extent of your responsibility as a listener to ensure that communication
is consistently ethical.
Your journey into listening will be an exciting one. Few skills have more
potential for facilitating so many important outcomes—better relationships,
increased enjoyment of your surroundings, and personal and professional
