What is It

The computer as a whole does not focus only with the components visible to
our naked eyes. It will not function properly without support or the software
itself.
Software and hardware are like bread and butter; without each other the computer
cannot function properly.

Nowadays, the need to use application for daily living is not for luxury
rather
it is a vital part of our survival.

Installation (or setup) of a computer program (including

device
drivers and plugins), is the act of making the program ready for execution.
Installation refers to the particular configuration of a software or hardware with
a
view to making it usable with the computer. A soft or digital copy of the piece of
software (program) is needed to install it. There are different processes of
installing
a piece of software (program). Because the process varies for each program and each
computer, programs (including operating systems) often come with an installer, a
specialized program responsible for doing whatever is needed (see below) for the
installation. Installation may be part of a larger software deployment process.

Installation typically involves code (program) being copied/generated from

the
installation files to new files on the local computer for easier access by the
operating
system, creating necessary directories, registering environment variables,
providing
separate program for un-installation etc. Because code is generally
copied/generated
in multiple locations, uninstallation usually involves more than just erasing the
program folder. For example, registry files and other system code may need to be
modified or deleted for a complete uninstallation.

Some computer programs can be executed by simply copying them into

a folder stored on a computer and executing them. Other programs are supplied in
a form unsuitable for immediate execution and therefore need an installation
procedure. Once installed, the program can be executed again and again, without
the need to reinstall before each execution.

Common operations performed during software installations include:

 Making sure that necessary system requirements are met.
 Checking for existing versions of the software.
 Creating or updating program files and folders.
 Adding configuration data such as configuration files, Windows registry entries
or environment variables.

9
 Making the software accessible to the user, for instance by creating links,
shortcuts or bookmarks.
 Configuring components that run automatically, such as daemons or Windows
services.
 Performing product activation.
 Updating the software versions.

These operations may require some charges or be free of charge. In case of

payment, installation costs mean the costs connected and relevant to or incurred as
a result of installing the drivers or the equipment in the customers' premises.
Some installers may attempt to trick users into installing junkware such as
various forms of adware, toolbars, trialware or software of partnering companies.
To
prevent this, extra caution on what exactly is being asked to be installed is
needed.
The installation of additional software then can simply be skipped or unchecked
(this
may require the user to use the "custom", "detailed" or "expert" version of the
installation procedure).
Such malicious conduct is not necessarily a decision by the software
developers or their company but can also be an issue of external installers such as
the Download.com installer by CNET.

APPLICATION SOFTWARE

An application is a type of software that allows you to perform

specific
tasks. Applications for desktop or laptop computers are sometimes called
desktop
applications, and those for mobile devices are called mobile apps. When you
open
an application, it runs inside the operating system until you close it. Much of
the
time, you will have more than one application open at the same time, and this
is
known as multitasking.

App is a very common term for an application, especially for simple

applications that can be downloaded cheaply or even for free. Many apps are
also
available for mobile devices and even some TVs.
Three types of Application software

A. Desktop App is applications that run in a personal computer and laptops.

Types of Desktop Applications

There are countless desktop applications out there, and they fall into many
different categories. Some are fuller-more features (like Microsoft Word),
while
others may only do one or two things (like gadgets). Below are just a few
types
of applications that you might use:

• Word Processors: A word processor allows you to write a letter, design a

flyer,
and create many other kinds of documents. The most well-known word
processor is Microsoft Word.
10
 Personal Finance: Personal finance software, such as Quicken, allows you
to keep track of your income and expenses, create a budget, and more. Most
personal finance programs can automatically download information
from your bank, so you don't have to manually type in all of your
transactions.

 Web Browsers: A web browser is the tool that you use to access the
World Wide Web. Most computers come with a web browser pre-
installed, but you can also download a different one if you prefer.
Examples of browsers include Internet Explorer, Firefox, Google
Chrome, and Safari.

 Games: There are many different games that you can play on your
computer. They range from card games such as Solitaire, to action
games like Player Unknown’s Battleground (PUBG). Many action games
require a lot of computing power, so they may not work unless you
have a newer computer.

(Sony Interactive Entertainment LLC 2019 )

 Media Players: If you want to listen to mp3s or watch movies that

you've downloaded, you'll need to use a media player. Netflix and
Spotify are popular media services application.

(Wikimedia Commons 2020)

11
 Gadgets: Sometimes called widgets, these are simple applications that
you can place on your desktop (or on the Dashboard if you're using a
Mac). There are many different types of gadgets, and they include
calendars, calculators, maps, news headlines, and more.

(win10widgets n.d.)

B. Web App is an application that is accessed over a network such as the Internet
or an intranet. It runs in the cloud and does not need to be installed on your
computer. These are sometimes called cloud apps.

(Wikimedia Commons 2020)

 Online Email Services: Services like Gmail and Yahoo! Mail run within
your browser and can do many of the same things that email programs like
Microsoft Outlook can do. After you sign up for an online email service, you
can begin using it immediately - no installation is required. Instead of
being
stored on your computer, your emails are stored in the cloud.

 Google Docs: Google Docs is an office suite that runs within your browser.
Much like Microsoft Office, you can use it to create documents,
spreadsheets, presentations, and more. Your documents are stored in the
cloud, which makes it easy to share your documents with other people.
 Facebook: Facebook lets you create an online profile and interact with your
friends. Profiles and conversations are constantly evolving, so Facebook
uses web app technologies throughout the site to keep the information up-
to-date. There are also games and other web apps that you can add to
your Facebook profile.

12
C. Mobile App is a software application designed to run on smartphones,
tablet computers and other mobile devices.
Desktop and laptop computers aren't the only devices that can run
apps. You can also download apps for mobile devices like smartphones
and tablet computers, which opens up a lot of new possibilities. Here
are a few examples of mobile apps:

Snapchat lets you easily talk with friends,

view Live Stories from around the world,
and explore news in Discover.

(Pinterest 2020)
Messenger instantly reach the people in
your life—for free. Messenger is just like
texting, but you don't have to pay for every
message (it works with your data plan).
Not just for Facebook friends: Message
people in your phone book and just enter a
(Facebook 2020)
phone number to add a new contact.
Instagram is a simple way to capture and
share the world’s moments. Follow your
friends and family to see what they’re up to,
and discover accounts from all over the
(Wikimedia Commons 2020) world that are sharing things you love.

PREPARING INSTALLER APPS

Before doing installation, there are some essential factors that we should always
know.

1. Platform Environment

2. Categories of Installer Apps

a) Open Source/Freeware are applications that can be use by the end users for
free. These applications don’t have equivalent price.
b) Licensed under exclusive legal right of the copyright holder with the intent
that the licensee is given the right to use the software only under certain
conditions, and restricted from other uses, such as modification, sharing,
studying, redistribution, or reverse engineering. These are applications that
need to be purchased before using it such as, Adobe Photoshop, Windows 8
and Microsoft Office.

13
c) Trial ware is also a type of proprietary software which is provided to users
for
a certain limited trial basis and pursuant to a license which restricts any
commercial benefit, use or exploitation of the software. This application
usually
offers 30 days trial or more.

d) Subscription-based application is an app that allows a customer or

organization to purchase or subscribe for a specific period of time for a set
price. Subscribers typically commit to the services on a monthly or annual
basis.

TYPES OF INSTALLER

a. Desktop Apps are application that are installed in a computer either PC or

laptop.
• Portable Apps are applications that able to use without installation.
• Installed Apps are applications that mandatorily installed in your
computer
b. Web Apps are applications that are accessed over a network such as the
Internet or an intranet.
c. Metro Apps/Windows 8.1 Apps are applications that solely run in Windows
8 OS or later version, that can be downloaded from Windows Apps Store
d. Mobile Apps are applications that designed to run in smartphone, or tablets
such as, surface tablet, iPad or galaxy tab.
e. Windows Universal apps are applications that run in different platforms using
Windows 10 operating system

PURPOSE OF INSTALLATION

Before the installation we need to identify first the objective of its execution.
You need
a certain app for a certain purpose. You must identify if you really need that app
or
not.

Example:

You are graphics designer for a clothing product, and you installed Adobe
Illustrator
because you need to create a vector art of a certain clothing line for your new
project.
Creating a vector art is the purpose why you installed Adobe Illustrator.

Different Ways of Preparing Installer Apps

There are several ways in preparing installer apps

1. Direct downloading/installation from web

Installation directly from the web is too risky it may contain malware or virus it
may also requires ample time in installation mainly if you have poor internet
connection.

14
2. Via USB storage devices (e.g., flash disks, external HDD)
This installation is most recommended compared to other ways of preparing an
installer app. It is more portable and manageable due to portability of its
execution.
3. Via installation disc
It is the traditional way of installation of application, it requires ODD in every
installation. Software are burned in an optical disc.
4. Via intranet or LAN network
This method requires LAN connection in conducting installation. Via intranet
installation made faster and more efficient. It enables you to deploy multiple
installation during the process.

INSTALL MICROSOFT OFFICE 2007 using a CD or DVD

Many software titles, games, and utilities have an AutoPlay feature. This
feature automatically starts a setup screen for the software when the CD or DVD
is inserted. If your program contains this feature, follow the steps that appear
after
inserting the disc into the computer.
These instructions will install the Microsoft Office 2007 and WILL RETAIN
the previous version. This dual MS office capability may be beneficial to you as
you
become familiar with the newer Office look and feel. The one exception is that you
cannot have 2 versions of MS Outlook – so this installation will remove the
previous
Outlook and install Outlook 2007.
Step 1. Insert your Office 2007 CD into the drive. If the
setup wizard doesn’t start automatically, navigate the CD
drive and click SETUP.EXE
The following window will appear. Click on RUN.

bottom left, then click CONTINUE in the bottom left of the
window.

(Wilkes University n.d.)

15
Step 4. Select Customize

(Wilkes University n.d.)

Step 5. On the upgrade tab, select Remove only the

following applications. Then from the list of applications
to remove, select MICROSOFT OUTLOOK (This will
remove the old Outlook, so the new version will install.
This process will not affect email files or previous setup
options. Now click UPGRADE in the bottom right of the
window.

(Wilkes University n.d.)

Step 6. It is recommended that you select option 1 (Get

online Help), but this is your choice. Choose your options
and select NEXT.

(Wilkes University n.d.)

Step 7. And then choose the option to download and
