Education Theory
In order to truly benefit from the field immersion experience, it is necessary to first and
foremost know the school community. The school community is comprised of teachers,
administrators, students, and anyone who has a stake in the teaching – learning process. It may also
refer to social and emotional connections that community members may have to the school. These
connections may be familial in nature as these would include parents and relatives of the students or
experiential which may include former students (School Community 2014).
Knowing people in the school community is a good starting point for establishing
relationships with them. A good working relationship is the key to success in any endeavour.
Aside from knowing the people who are working in the community, it is very essential to get
to know the students. Students are at the center of the learning process. As such, knowing and
establishing a relationship with them is important because when students feel comfortable with their
teachers, they learn best.
