Personal Safety Protocols to Avoid

Dehydration, Overexertion, Hypothermia

and Hyperthermia during MVPA

DEHYDRATION - Dehydration occurs when you lose more fluid than you take in, and your body
doesn't have enough water and other fluids to carry out its normal functions.

DEHYDRATION SYMPTOMS:
● Thirst
● Dry Mouth
● Rapid Heart Beat

from any pharmacy.

OVEREXERTION - The state of being physically and mentally pushed beyond one’s limits.

HYPOTHERMIA - a severe condition in which the body temperature drops to an abnormally low
level. It occurs when the body is unable to produce enough heat to counter the heat that it is
losing.

HYPOTHERMIA TREATMENT:
● move the person to a warm, dry place, if possible, or sheltering them from the elements
● covering their whole body and head with blankets, leaving only the face clear
● putting the individual on a blanket to insulate them from the ground
● providing warm drinks, if the individual is conscious, but no alcohol or caffeine

HYPERTHERMIA - refers to a group of heat-related conditions characterized by an

abnormally high body temperature
HYPERTHERMIA TREATMENT:
● loosening or removing excess clothing
● lying down and trying to relax
● taking a cool bath or shower
● placing a cool, wet cloth on the forehead
● placing ice packs or compresses under the arms and groin
● using a fan to cool the skin
