Despite its importance in protecting individual rights and advancing enterprise’s
development. Whistle blowing also has great significance in boosting social and governmental
progress and improvement.
For the government, whistle blowing can work as a social control mechanism, for example
the contain of corruption and the malfeasance of the officials in the system. The well known
cases are watergate scandal. When five men broke into the Democratic National Committee
headquarters at the Watergate hotel in 1972, Felt was the man chosen to head up the
investigation. His mission was to determine the involvement, if any, of the White House. After
being pressured from upstairs to stay clear, Felt decided the press was the only way to expose the
corruption and the White House’s complicity. Using the moniker Deep Throat, he met regularly
with Washington Post journalists Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein, helping them uncover the
full story which ultimately lead to Nixon’s resignation. And in china corruption used to be a severe
problem in government which will hinder the government departments from functioning well. So
in recent years our nation has came up with laws and systems about corruption-reporting which
encourage everyone to report the corruption and corrupted officials that exist in the government
and the result, as everyone can see, is very good. A lot corrupted officials have been arrested and
our government is getting better and better.
While for the ordinary citizens, whistle blowing can provide them with a legal weapon to
fight against official malfeasance, misfeasance, and nonfeasance. And in turn they can help the
improvement of society. For example the most well-known whistle blower to Chinese people: li
wenliang, a doctor that dare to stand out to warn everyone about the suspected SARS cases.
Though he was summoned by Wuhan police for “spread rumors on the internet about SARS
outbreak”, the later events turned out to prove him right. Li returned to work and later
contracted covid-19. on 7 February he died from this disease. His whistleblowing act and death
has alert people about how serious the pandemic situation could be and help the improvement
of society in coping with the pandemic.
What’s more it can help to form a fine public ethos, an ethos that encourage people to stand
up and point out the wrongdoings existed in the government and society bravely and help fix
them. By then can a country gain the ability to improve and develop for real.
