Clear Toner Applications

• Use the high gloss clear toner

to add more dimension and
depth to full color jobs
• Apply to selected elements
like logos, graphics, images,
headlines, etc. or flood the
whole page for a smooth
finish
• Create security watermarks
and artistic background
patterns for a sophisticated
high-quality look
The pattern is placed on a separate layer
and is designed in spot color “clear”
White Toner Applications

• Print on color, metallic and

transparent media, plain or
textured, to create original
designs
• Put elegant accents on
outputs like packaging,
invites, posters, envelopes,
etc.
• Apply white toner to
different workflows such as:
– See-through designs, CMYK
+ white on transparent
media
– White under-print for
metallic, pearlescent or
color media The flowers are outlined in spot color
“white” to overprint on top of CMYK 4

individual pages or

• High quality provides

the best overall
quality, but at a
potential slowdown in
speed.

allows the user to
save toner if the same

common setting when
using Clear toner

Setting up Clear in Adobe Photoshop CC
Photoshop CC • Photoshop is a raster
based application. It
really only
understands RGB,
CMYK, LAB,
Grayscale, etc..

• Spot Colors can be

introduced into a
document as a
duotone or as an
additional channel in a
RGB or CMYK image.

• Start out by making a

New Layer.
Photoshop CC

• You can name this

layer anything you
want, but I called mine
Area_Select since that
is what I‟m going to be
doing.
Photoshop CC

• Use a selection (lasso,

magic want, etc…) tool
to select the area that
you want to add Clear
toner to.
Photoshop CC

• Go to Channels and
select New Spot
Channel.
Photoshop CC • Give it a name that
matches your Clear
spot colors that you
defined on the Fiery.

• You can click in the

Color box to change
the alternate color of
your Clear Channel.

• You can not print from

Photoshop. You will
need to save as PSD,
EPS, multi-channel
TIFF or PDF. You
then can place it in
another document or
import the PDF
directly into the Fiery.

• Applies White toner to
those areas that are
using a „Clear‟ spot
color that‟s defined in

• Differs from Clear in

that you don‟t have
additional selections
for Text, Graphics,
Images and other spot
colors.

• This is the most

common setting when
using White toner
Setting up Single Pass White in Adobe CC
Single-pass White in Adobe CC

• The process is exactly

the same as working
with Clear, but you
just use the White
specialty spot color
name.
Multi Pass White
Multi Pass White
• Allows the Fiery to separate the print job
into 2 separate runs.
• White toner can be printed first for jaw
dropping effects on silver metallic media.
• When printing on colored paper Multi
Pass White allows for CMYK data to be
imaged correctly
• Creating transparencies with a white
background.
Multi Pass White Utility
• You must be at the Fiery
itself or connected to it
via a remote desktop
connection.
• Left mouse click in the
corner of the Fiery Bar
and select Multi Pass
White
Multi Pass White Utility

• The Utility will open.

• Jobs that are on hold

and have the “Apply
white toner to spot
color(s)” option in Job
Properties will appear
in the Job name drop
down.
Multi Pass White Utility

• There are three

modes.

• Metallic substrate
inverts the selection
for the white specialty
color. This allows the
silver media to show
as foil and cmyk toner
to give metallic color
effects. Areas that
were intended to be
paper white will get
white toner.
Multi Pass White Utility

• Color substrate will

print white under
those areas specified
in the document.

• Backlit film is
actually a single pass
process that fills the
paper white area of the
document with white.
The image must be
mirrored for most
applications to print
correctly.
Multi Pass White Utility

• After printing the first

pass the utility will
then ask you to put the
print(s) back in the
same tray and click on
Print Next Pass.

• You can then quit the

utility or select
another job to print.
Multi Pass White

• You could use the

Name white in your
job, but it may be
easier to something
like Silver. Some
customers may also
have used another
name in their jobs.
You can use the Pre-
Flight tool (part of
Graphic Arts Premium
Edition) to see what
those colors are.
Setting up Multi Pass White in Adobe CC
for Metallic media
Adobe CC • Similar to working
with single pass
applications, but you
want your “silver layer
on the bottom and
your “color” set to
overprint.

• When used with the

Multi Pass utility the
“silver” specialty color
will not print, but the
CMYK color on top
will print creating a
gold color since it‟s
made up of mostly
Yellow toner and a
little Magenta toner.
