WORK ENERGY- (WORKSHEET-1)

Class 11 - Physics
Time Allowed: 1 hour Maximum Marks: 30

1. Two bodies of masses m1 and m2 have the same linear momentum. What is the ratio of their kinetic energies?

2. What is the work done by the force of tension in the string of simple pendulum?
3. A force F = a + bx acts on a particle in the X-direction, where a and b are constants. Find the work done by this force
during a displacement from x = 0 to x = d.
4. Fill in the blank: 1 joule = ________ erg.
5. Give two examples from daily life where according to physics, work done is zero.

6. A stone of mass 0.4 kg is thrown vertically up with a speed of 9.8 ms-1. Find the potential and kinetic energies after half
a second.
7. A ball bounces to 80% of its original height. What fraction of its mechanical energy is lost in each bounce? Where does
this energy go?
8. Find the angle between force (F ^ ^ ^
= 3 i + 4 j − 5k) unit and displacement (d = ^ ^ ^
5 i + 4 j + 3k) unit. Also, find the
projection of F on d.
9. A ball at rest is dropped from a height of 12 m. It loses 25% of its kinetic energy in striking the ground, find the height to
which it bounces. How do you account for the loss in kinetic energy?
10. The Earth moving around the Sun in a circular orbit is acted upon by a force and hence work must be done on the Earth
by the force. Do you agree with this statement?
11. A particle of mass m moves in a straight line with retardation proportional to its displacement. Find the expression for
loss of kinetic energy for any displacement x.
12. A woman pushes a trunk on a railway platform which has a rough surface. She applies a force of 100 N over a distance
of 10 m. Thereafter, she gets progressively tired and her applied force reduces linearly with distance to 50 N. The total
distance through which the trunk has been moved is 20 m. Plot the force applied by the woman and the frictional force,
which is 50 N versus displacement. Calculate the work done by the two forces over 20 m.
13. A wooden block of mass 1 kg is pushed up a surface inclined to horizontal at an angle of 30° by a force of 10 N parallel
to the inclined surface [see figure]. The coefficient of friction between the block and the incline is 0.1. If the block is
pushed up by 10 m along the incline. Calculate

i. Work done against gravity.

ii. Work done against force of friction.
iii. Acceleration of block when it moves upward.
14. A 8 kg block initially at rest is pulled to the right along a frictionless horizontal surface by a constant, horizontal force of
12 N, as shown in figure. Find the velocity of the block after it has moved a distance of 3 m. Also, find out the
acceleration of the block.

The weight of the block is balanced by the normal force and neither of these forces does work, since the displacement is
horizontal. Because there is no friction, the resultant external force is 12 N.
15. Show that total mechanical energy of a freely falling body remains constant throughout the fall.
