ABOUT:

The "Electrical Power Loads Calculator" spreadsheet was created to calculate, in detail, the energy and
power loads for all-electric homes. It is the most advanced and customisable calculator that produces
unparalleled accuracy for data on household electrical loads and total energy consumption.

A future of low energy buildings, and where full life cycle analysis achieves true sustainability, exists in
the all-electric home. This tool enables the analysis required to compare energy characteristics, design
for efficiency, and inform onsite renewable power generation systems.

Electricians, solar designers and enthusiasts alike will benefit. It is particularly useful for offgrid homes.

INSTRUCTIONS:
- Navigate to the "Power Loads" sheet.
- Fill in the "HOUSEHOLD DETAILS" table (top left).

- Table 1 "PEAK DAY" ENERGY CONSUMPTION" is used to calcualte electrical energy consumption for a
single household over a "peak use" 24hr day, for both Summer & Winter scenarios. Operate by turning
power loads ON/OFF in column A by toggling with '1'/'0' to create a theoretical "occupancy" profile.
Modify other relevant fields in the table such as appliance types, quantities, power ratings, etc. The table
will automatically calculate a total energy consumption for the household. See the "Summary 1" table at
top for results. Winter and Summer are separated so that the peak energy consumption season can be
identified and solar panels systems, battery capacity, etc sized accordingly.

- Table 2 "OFF-GRID PROFILES" table is used for detailing occupancy living patterns for different
seasons/times of day to determine Max Demand, Amps, and Max Surge Demand. Use this table to size
inverters, battery discharge currents, solar arrays, etc. Alternatively, with a particular system in mind-
reverse-engineer and alter the table until a user profile matches the system limitations for off-grid living.
E.g this may mean not running more than 3 appliances simultaneously, etc. See the second "Summary 2"
table for results.

NOTES:
- Grey coloured cells require user input and/or consideration.
- Energy consumption formulas should use rated power figures in combination with power factors
multiplied by time, rather than using a measured real VAR reading (such as those measured by
PowerMate or similar devices).
- Standby power is included as a specific row for some items, generally applied where switching off when
not in use is unlikely to occur, e.g. water pumps located outside. Standby power is otherwise ignored,
however can be accounted for by adding 5-10% to the total daily energy use figure.

second "Summary 2" Electronics loads, such as compact fluorescent lights (CFL, electronic ballast), TVs, computers, stereos,
DVD players, etc have an approx power factor of 0.4~0.8. Inductive appliances such as electric motors,
power tools, transformers, magnetic ballast type fluorescent lamps, fridges, air conditioners, etc have a
power factor of approximately 0.2~0.7. In particular, many water pumps and some of the older fridges
which will have a power factor around 0.2~0.4.

power factors SURGE FACTOR

easured by The inverter can normally handle up to 3x the specified continuous rating for a very short period of time
The surge rating of an appliance is normally the power required to start it, and with electric motors,
e switching off when fridge compressors, and even TVs, it can be quite high. Australian Standard AS4509.2 states a surge
herwise ignored, factor of 7x the continuous power should be used for electric motors, water pumps, fridges, air
conditioner, and washing machines. A surge factor of 3x should be used for kitchen appliances and othe
electronic equipment, and surge factor of 1x for resistive loads. So a 1hp water pump will need typically
7x times the VA rating, (apparent power) which is over 8000VA surge, just to get it started!! And the
washing machine could require up to 7,700VA. This surge will also happen during the agitator cycle as
the motor cuts in and out with various cycles. So with both appliances operating, the inverter could hav
a continuous load of approx 2,250Watts, and a surge of up to 15,700 Watts.
