How does nature work? How can we use its concepts? By making models and formulating natural laws, we can describe and predict the natural world.

Physics is a 'hard' science: it is concerned with hard figures, precise and pure measurements. These are used to produce models and explain natural
phenomena.
The Bachelor's programme in Physics lasts three years. During your first year, you will study basic subjects such as mechanics, special relativity, and
electricity & magnetism. You will also take practical courses.

Programme details
Programme structure
The Groningen science and engineering programmes stand out for their academic excellence. The work pace in the first year is generally high and the
courses contents demanding. The first year curriculum concentrates on laying a sound basis for our engineering and natural science disciplines. This
allows our students to choose their specialization tracks already in the second half of the first year.

During your first year, you will study basic subjects such as mechanics, special relativity, and electricity & magnetism. You will also take practical courses.
During this year, you can choose between four tracks:

- Biophysics & Medical Physics

- Energy & Environmental Physics
- Nanophysics
- Particle Physics

Progression after the programme

Research, advising or teaching… there are many fields open to you! Physics consists of a broad Bachelor's programme, after which you can specialize with
a Master's degree programme. You can then pursue a career in business or continue in the academic world.

Applied Physics is like a voyage of discovery. You won’t be sailing the seven seas, but you will be investigating how the world works. As an applied physicist,
you’re looking for regularities and patterns in nature, and how to translate natural phenomena into technological applications. Did you know that
turbulent flow in our blood is very similar to turbulent flow in the ocean?

Do you enjoy the scientific subjects in school and are you curious about the world and how it works? Do you persevere when you don’t understand things
immediately? Then our Applied Physics major will suit you well.

Programme details
Programme structure
Half of the Applied Physics bachelor’s program consists of major courses specifically focused on applied physics. During your studies you will acquire
basic knowledge and skills to help you understand physical phenomena and translate them into technological applications.

The program is a mix of

theory
practical assignments
projects
an internship
During the projects you will learn to collaborate in a team, and you will research physical phenomena. In the third year, you will work in a research group
for three months, as a ‘junior employee’.

Progression after the programme

After their Bachelor program, most of the students choose one of the Master programs offered by the faculty of Applied Physics. These are: Applied
Physics and Science and Technology of Nuclear Fusion.
