1 Bell's Adjustment Inventory(BAI)

INTRODUCTION

The term "Adjustment" refers to the behavioral process of balancing conflicting needs, or needs
against obstacles in the environment. Adjustment is very crucial and very important part of
evolutionary process of adaptation reflected through the behavior of humans and animals which
helps them to maintain equilibrium between their various needs and helped them to tackle the
obstacles of the environment. The factors of environment are what triggers the adjustment
behavior of an individual. When any factor of the environment changes the individual shows an
adjustment behavior to best suit their environment. When there is an inability to make a normal
adjustment to some need/stress in the environment, one might have adjustment
disorders/problems and that might lead to various mild as well as severe mental problems. Hence

while conducting his research under the guidance of the author. Dr. Ojha is retired Head of
Department of Psychology in K.G.K College, Moradabad. The test was published by National
Psychological Corporation, Agra, India.

Scoring:

The inventory is negative inventory hence, when an individual has responded in ‘Yes’ it
indicates their difficulties or adjustment issues in a particular area/ dimension and will score one
mark and when they have responded in ‘No’ it indicates that they do not have such adjustment
issues and will score zero. Therefore, high score on inventory signify poor adjustment whereas
low score signifies better adjustment in different areas and in respect of adjustment taken as a
whole.

Exception:

Some of the statements were found conflicting with the way they scored as per the manual,
therefore the scores were reversed to get the exact results from the test i.e., for a ‘Yes’ response,
it is scored as 0 and for 'No’ response, it is scored as 1. The altered statements are as follows:

Home Dimension: Statement no. 7, 24, 26 and 27
