Weather is the state of the atmosphere, describing for example the degree to which it is hot or cold, wet or dry,
calm or stormy, clear or cloudy. ... Weather refers to day-to-day temperature and precipitation activity, whereas
climate is the term for the averaging of atmospheric conditions over longer periods of time.
Climate is the statistics of weather over long periods of time. It is measured by assessing the patterns of variation
in temperature, humidity, atmospheric pressure, wind, precipitation, atmospheric particle count and other
meteorological variables in a given region over long periods of time.
• People who study climate are called climatologists. Climatologists use temperature and precipitation records to
define what a place's “normal” climate is like. They do this by averaging 30 years of temperature and precipitation
Key Concepts / Understandings to be Developed records. They also keep track of this information by making climographs for cities and regions.
• A climatologist attempts to discover and explain the impacts of climate so that society can plan its activities,
design its buildings and infrastructure, and anticipate the effects of adverse conditions. Although climate is not
weather, it is defined by the same terms, such as temperature, precipitation, wind, and solar radiation.
• Weather forecaster a person whose job is to report what the weather will be in the near future.
