(The process of systematically planning, developing, evaluating and managing the instructional
process by using principles of teaching and learning - D.O. 42, s. 2016)
A solar eclipse is when an object in space casts a shadow from the sun on another object in space.
Solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the Earth and sun, blocking the sunlight from reaching
Earth.
Key Concepts / Understandings to be Lunar eclipse occurs when the earth is directly between the sun and the moon.
Developed Total solar eclipses are visible on
Earth for only a few hundred miles wide. A lunar eclipse visible for at least half the earth.

4.1 Introductory Activity Review: What is Tide? Differentiate spring tide and neap tide.
Motivation: (Show a video of eclipses)
Ask:
5 minutes
Have you seen something like this in real situation?
What to do:
1. Use the pentel pen to draw the largest possible circle on the manila paper.
4.2 Activity 2.
Mark an x at a point on the outline of the circle.
3. Lay the
manila paper on the ground in a sunny area outside the clasroom.
4.Ask a group
member to stand in the center of the paper, facing the x. Mark on the paper where the center of the
classmate's shadow crosses the circle.
5. Repeat step 4 after every 30 minutes, five or six times a day.
Activity
2: How does a lunar eclipse occur?
1.On Activity 1, what is formed when a classmate stands in the center of the manila paper?
2.Why is a
10 minutes shadow cast on the paper when a clasmate stands in the center?
3.On activity 2, what is
formed when smaller ball moves behind the bigger ball?
4. How does a solar eclipse occur?
1. When can we have an eclipse on Earth?
4.4 Abstraction
Another important phenomenon which people on Earth experience is the occurrence of eclipses. Eclipses
can be predicted with great accuracy. They are classiied as lunar and solar eclipses. When the sun casts
the shadow of the moon on the surface of the Earth, it is called a solar eclipse. The moon' s shadow on the
earth has two parts namely, the umbra and the penumbra. The umbra is the darkest, narrow inner part of the
cone- shaped shadow where the light is completely cut off. A person standing on earth under the umbra sees
a total solar eclipse. During a total solar eclipse, the sun's corona can be seen. The penumbra is the outer,
lighter part of the shadow where the light is only partly cut off. In the penumbra area, which covers as much
larger part of the Earth's surface, only a partial solar eclipse can be seen. When the sun casts a shadow of
5 minutes the earth onto the surface of the moon, a lunar eclipse occurs. The earth's shadow also has an umbra and
penumbra. The moon passes frequently through the Earth's penumbra so that a partial lunar eclipse happens
more often. Total lunar eclipses are uncommon because the moon seldom passes through the earth's umbra.

Answer:
Review: Tides are the rising and falling of ocean water.
Spring tide is a very high tide which occurs during the new moon while neap tide is a very low
tide which occurs during the first and last quarter moon.

Answer:
1. shadow
2. because the sun was hidden by the pupil who was standing in front of the paper.
3. no lights are formed because the smaller ball is hiding from the bigger ball.
