14. Read the text carefully and answer the questions: [4]
a
The spreading of light by the air molecules is called the scattering of light. The light having the least wavelength
Co
scatters more. The sun appears red at sunrise and sunset, the appearance of the blue sky is due to the scattering
of light. The colour of the scattered light depends on the size of the particles. The smaller the molecules in the
e
atmosphere scatter smaller the wavelengths of light. The amount of scattering of light depends on the
n's

wavelength of light. When light from the sun enters the earth’s atmosphere, it gets scattered by the dust particles
and air molecules present in the atmosphere. The path of sunlight entering in the dark room through a fine hole
is seen because of the scattering of the sunlight by the dust particles present in its path inside the room.
Ce

(a) Does the color of Earth appear different to an astronaut in a spaceship?

(b) Why does the sky appear blue?
(c) Why at sunrise or sunset, the sun appears to be reddish white?
Sh

(d) Why is the red color selected for danger signal lights?
15. Read the text carefully and answer the questions: [4]
A student was asked to perform an experiment to study the force on a current carrying conductor in a magnetic
field. He took a small aluminum rod AB, a strong horse shoe magnet, some connecting wires, a battery and a
switch and connected them as shown. He observed that on passing current, the rod gets displaced. On reversing
the direction of current, the direction of displacement also gets reversed. On the basis of your understanding of
this phenomenon, answer the following questions:

(a) Why does the rod get displaced on passing current through it?
(b) State the rule that determines the direction of the force on the conductor AB.
(c) a. If the U shaped magnet is held vertically and the aluminum rod is suspended horizontally with its end
B towards due north, then on passing current through the rod from B to A as shown, in which direction
will the rod be displaced?
b. Name any two devices that use current carrying conductors and magnetic field.
(d) Draw the pattern of magnetic field lines produced around a current carrying straight conductor held
vertically on a horizontal cardboard. Indicate the direction of the field lines as well as the direction of
current flowing through the conductor.

to each other, whatever may be angle of incidence. Show the same with the help of diagram.
17. Why does electric current start flowing in a circuit the moment circuit is complete? When do we say that the [5]
potential difference across a conductor in a circuit is 1 volt? Calculate the potential difference between the two
terminals of a battery if 12 joules of work is done in transferring 2 coulombs of charge.
