1. PREAMBLE
This Method Statement is prepared for conducting the Initial Anchor Pile Load
Test to be carried out on 1000mm diameter piles installed .Pile shall be tested for
2. TEST METHOD
The area around the pile was excavated to expose the pile head. Top of the Pile- pile
head - chipping shall be done to remove the contaminated concrete till the good
concrete is observed.
Exposed reinforcement of 1000mm Dia Pile was cut and the top surface of the pile was
b) Platform:-
The platform which offers resistance to the jack when load is applied on the pile is
made of structural steel beams (main beam and secondary beams) in both the
directions, erected such that the center of the platform coincides with the center of
the pile. The main beam (8.00Mx1.60mX2.50m) is fixed 1m high from test pile (1000mm
Ø) head top and the end sides are rested on the concrete solid blocks (2 No’s) top.
The secondary beams (2 No’s each of 8.00mX1.50mX0.90m) are rested on the main
beam and the ends of secondary beams are connected by the anchor piles
reinforcement, the reinforcement of anchor piles are inserted into the secondary beam
c) Apparatus:-
A bearing plate made of steel was placed on top of the pile and hydraulic jacks
(4No’s jacks of 500T capacity) set up at the center of the pile such that the load
transformed to the pile uniformly/centrally. The gap between the ram of the jack
and bottom of the main girder shall be filled with necessary steel plates
Datum bars, 2 no’s, shall be fixed with independent supports on both sides of the pile
and the dial gauges placed on periphery of the plate to measure the settlement on
The Maintained Load Test Method shall be carried on the test piles selected for conducting
the Initial vertical load test to find out whether the design assumptions does match with the
site practices on 1000 mm diameter pile.
The following is the procedure for the Maintained Static Load Test where the load is
applied in increment of 20% of the design load (600 Ton) up to 2.5 times the design load.
Incremental loading shall be carried out at each stage by applying a series of vertical
incremental load and each increment being of about 20 percent of design load i.e.,120MT
on the pile. Each loading maintained as per the criterion given below:
Final 1500MT Ton shall be maintained for 24 hours and readings shall be
3. PILE DETAILS: -
Each test piles details shall be provided under this column.
4. CONCLUSION:-
WITH REFERENCE TO the FILED OBSERVATIONS TEST LOAD GIVEN WAS 1156.80 Tons AND THE
GROSS SETTLEMENT IS ABOUT 19.20mm.
7.1.5
The safe vertical load on single pile for the initial test should be
c o r r e s p o n d i n g t o t h e s t a t e d t o t a l displacement permissible.
In this case with reference to the field observations we have attained 18mm
771.20MT.
As per the design consideration safe capacity of pile is 600MT this is less than the
above value.
Design of reaction piles is done as per IS 10270 -1983 (reaffirmed in 2003) for generating reactive force
to perform initial load test on 1000mm diameter pile with anticipated allowable load as 600t. The subsoil
at test location based on Borelog data submitted by the client (prepared by M/s J P Geo Consultants,
Kolkata is observed to be comprised of Very soft clay, Soft clay, stiff to very stiff clay followed by Hard
clay. The weighted average N values of very soft clay, soft clay and stiff to very stiff clay are taken based
on borelog details as 2, 4 and 19 respectively. The average thicknesses of very soft clay, Soft clay and
stiff to very stiff clay are considered as 5m, 8m and 27m respectively. The weighted average value of N
from 40m to 50m depth is taken as 40 and the value of N below 50m depth is taken as 50. 4 Nos. of
bored cast- in-situ concrete piles of 1000mm diameter are proposed with pile length of 50m to derive
reaction for loading test pile through skin friction from subsoil strata. The design details are presented
below.
FN
1. Details of Loading
Considering 24 tor steel bars of 25mm diameter of Fe 500 steel in top portion of pile, Ultimate load
capacity of bars = 589 t > 468.75t
Qs = ∑ .
Where,
rs is allowable side socket shear resistance in component layer
As is Surface area of pile in component layer
From Table 2 of section B-3.4 of IS 2911 part 1 Section 2 (2010), static cone penetration resistance
(kN/m2) of very soft clay /soft to medium clay and stiff to very stiff /hard clay strata are deduced from
Standard Penetration resistance (N) as 150N and 200N respectively. Ultimate skin friction resistance (rs)
in very soft clay /soft clay, stiff to very stiff clay and hard clay layers (kN/m2) are determined as qc/25,
qc/75 and qc/100 respectively as per Table 1 of Section B-3.3. The ultimate skin friction resistances in
very soft clay, soft clay, stiff to very stiff clay and hard clay strata are determined considering to N values
of 2, 4, 19 and 40 are determined as 1.2t/m2, 2.4t/m2, 5.1 t/m2 and 8 t/m2 respectively. The skin friction
contribution in top 5m depth is ignored.
Ultimate capacity of reaction pile in skin friction = πx1 [8x 2.4 + 27x 5.1 + 10 x 8] = 744.2t
For a factor of safety of 1.5, safe load capacity in tension/ uplift = 496.1 + 59.7 (submerged weight of
pile) = 555.8 > 468.75t.
Capacity of 4 reaction piles in skin friction / soil bond = 2223t > 1875t
As per IS 456-2000, Allowable bond strength is taken as 1.5MPa for M30 concrete

16mm dia. spaced at 2 m intervals.
