BEST PRACTICE OF ESPIRITU ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Reading Comprehension is the ability to understand, analyze, synthesize, and use what you have read. In
Espiritu Elementary School, the teacher’s best practices focuses in improving the learners reading
comprehension because when this is so, it is easier for the children to understand what they read and
eventually help the learners not just in English but also in other subject areas.
The teacher’s in Espiritu ES applies the following specific best practices in reading that are used to assist
learners in their reading comprehension:
1. READ ALOUD
-Reading aloud integrates auditory learning of listening to the words and tactile-kinesthetic
learning of the act of saying the words aloud, which intrinsically builds reading comprehension.
2. FIND THE MAIN IDEA
-Making a conscious effort to identify the main idea of a passage can help improve the learners reading
comprehension. What or who is the passage about? Why does it matter? Being able to quickly identify the
subject of a passage can help the reader get a clear picture and understanding of what’s the point of what
they are reading.
3. FIND THE SUPPORTING DETAILS
-identifying a couple of supporting information about the main idea is the act of consciously thinking
about a few points that a reader can remember about what she/he have just read.
4. RECOGNIZE STORY STRUCTURE AND KEY POINTS
-identifying the structure of the reading selection like asking if it has beginning, middle, and end or if is it
all about one topic only; the theme; the mood; the characters and their actions; the setting; the conflict;
who is the protagonist or the antagonist- breaking down all the elements of a reading passage can help the
readers get a more complete picture of what they have read and organize the various parts in an easy-to-
understand way.
5. USE GRAPHIC ORGANIZERS
-this helped the readers organize the main idea and details of the passage in a visual manner.
6. ANSWER QUESTIONS
-teachers usually asks from lower order and average order to higher order thinking skill questions to help
the readers build their active recalling skills.
7. GENERATE QUESTIONS
- is a great way to stretched the readers’ capacity in understanding.; to get more complete understanding
of what they have read.
All these practices were always present on the teacher’s reading activities especially in their LRP; RRE;
English, Filipino and MTB Lessons; and other Subject integration. Through these practices which focuses
on improving auditory, visual and tactile processing areas of the brain make it work more efficiently and
help greatly most of the learners in Espiritu ES to boost their reading comprehension skills and eventually
improves their overall academic performance and learning skills.
