 INTRODUCTRY QESTIONS:

S.N TEACHER’S QUESTIONS STUDENT’S ANSWER

O

1. What will happen if you throw ball in upward direction? It will come back to Earth.

2. Where did the fruit fall after reaping? It falls on ground.

3. Which force is responsible for these processes? Gravitational force.

4. Which scientist is aware with this force? Isaac Newton.

5. What is gravitation? A force of attraction.

 STATEMENT OF TOPIC:

Today we’ll study about gravitation.

 PRESENTATION:
 Activity:

Telling a student to come forward and throw a tennis ball upwards in a small and large
trajectory notice as the ball reaches a maximum height it stops for few nano seconds and falls
downwards which is due to gravity as the gravitational force of earth is fulling it towards the

Introduction the earth. It is said that when Newton
was sitting under a tree, an apple fell know about the

Newton start thinking. He thought
that: if the earth can attract apple, can
it nit attract the moon? If the force
the same in both cases? He
conjectured that the same type of
force is responsible in both cases. He
argued that at each point of its orbit,
the moon falls towards the earth,
instead of going of in a same line.
So, it must be attached by the earth
but we don’t really see the moon
falling towards the earth.

 EXAMPLE OF CENTRIPITAL FORCE DEMONSTRATION:

Let two objects A and B of masses
M1 and M2 lie at a distance d from
each other as shown in the Fig. let the
force of attraction between two
objects be Fg. According to the
universal law of gravitation, the force
between two objects is directly
proportional to the product of their
masses. That is,

Point

And the force between two objects is inversely proportional to

the square of the distance between them, that is,
F ∝ 1/d2 …………..(2)

Combining Eqs.(1) and (2), we get

F∝ M1 × M2
d2
F = G M 1 × M2
d2
Where G is the constant of proportionality and is called the
universal gravitational constant. By multiplying crosswise,
gives

F × d 2 = G M1 × M 2
G = F d2
M1 × M2

The SI unit of G is Nm2 kg-2

The value of G = 6.673 × 10-11Nm2 kg-2

Numerical Q. The mass of the earth is 6 × 1024 kg and that of the moon is
7.4 × 10 22 kg. If the distance between the earth and moon is
3.84 × 105 km, calculate the force exerted by the earth on the
moon.
Please explain this
Solution: again.

 The mass of earth, M1 = 6 × 1024 kg

 The mass of the moon, M2 = 7.4×1022 kg

 The distance between the earth and the moon,

d =3.84 × 105 km

= 3.84×105 ×1000m

=3.84×108

 G = 6.7 × 10-11 Nm2 kg-2

The force exerted by the earth on the moon is,

F E = G M 1 × M2

d2

= 6.7 ×10-11 N m2 kg-2 × 6 × 1024 kg × 7.4 × 1022 kg

(3.84 × 108 m)2

=2.02 × 1020 N

Thus, the force exerted by the earth on the moon is 2.02×1020 N

 Time for students to ask questions:

 RECAPITLATIONS:
Q.1 State the universal law of gravitation?
Q.2 Write the formula to find the magnitude of the gravitational force between the
earth and an object on the surface of the earth?
Q.3 If the moon attracts the earth, why does the earth not move towards the moon?

 HOMEWORK:
Q.1 How does the force of the gravitation between two objects change when the
distance between them is reduced to half?
Q.2 Gravitational force on all objects in proportion to their masses. Why then, a
heavy object does not fall faster than a light object?
Q.3 What is the magnitude of the gravitational force between the earth and a 1 kg
object on its surface? (mass of the earth is 6×1024 kg and radius of the earth is 6.4 ×
106 m).
Q.4 The earth and the moon are attracted to each other by gravitational force. Does
the earth attract the moon with a force that is greater or smaller or the same as the
force with which the moon attracts the earth? Why ?
