CHAPTER ONE
1.0 INTRODUCTION

Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) is a practical skill

program designed to empower students of tertiary academic institutions

with necessary work environment skill and expose them to more

practical knowledge than what was taught theoretically in class. SIWES

was established and funded by the Federal Government of Nigeria in

1973 and is managed by Industrial Training Fund (ITF) and supervised by:

National Universities Commission (NUC); National Board for Technical

Education (NBTE); and National Commission for Colleges of Education

(NCCE). Students of Universities and other degree awarding institutions

are required to spend six months or 24 weeks, while students of

polytechnics and colleges of education have to spend 16 weeks.

1.1.0 OBJECTIVES OF SIWES

Specifically the objectives of SIWES are:

1.4.0 MY REPORTING TO IT

Page | 8
I reported for my IT at HITI on 21st August 2023. I met the person in

charge of coordinating IT and introduced myself. I was welcomed and

was introduced to other staff working there. I and other IT students were

organized and were given orientation on what we would expect to do

throughout the IT period: like the importance of the IT; rules and

regulations of the institute; coming and closing time; how to fill the log

book; how to communicate with staff, students and visitors; how to seek

help from the management, etc. We were also given supervisors who will

be endorsing our logbook whenever we fill the week.

We were also assigned to sections, in which I was assigned to the

section of computer training. Responsibilities of the section include:

a. Practical computer instruction.

b. Lab coordination including computer maintenance.

c. Web design.

d. Other applications.

Page | 9
CHAPTER TWO

2.1.0 EXPERIENCE GAINED DURING IT

The IT of three month has given me great experience which is so much

consistent to my line of study, which is communication technology. The

activities I attended during the IT are as follows:

 Classroom teaching observation.

 Teamwork and problem solving tactics.

 An overview of Microsoft Office word

 An overview of Microsoft Office PowerPoint

 Database designs and techniques.

 Web design (with HTML, CSS, JAVASCRIPT, PHP and MySQL).

I normally attended lectures every day and at the end of the week I

would be given an end-of-the-week project, which would reflect the

main jobs of the week. I would normally present the job to the supervisor

the next week where he would do me some corrections and scoring. The

Page | 10
jobs are usually practical like targeting a section or division inside our

index file and its styles.

2.2.3 WEB DESIGN

On the other hand, I also learned a lot about web design and

development using HTML, CSS, JavaScript and PHP. Below is an overview

of web design learned during the period of IT.

2.2.4 DEFINATION OF WEB DESIGN

Web design is a multifaceted discipline that involves crafting the visual

and interactive elements of a website to deliver an optimal user

experience. Skilled web designers blend aesthetic considerations with

practical functionality, incorporating principles of user interface (UI) and

user experience (UX) design. They meticulously plan the layout, color

schemes, typography, and navigation, ensuring that the website is not

only visually appealing but also intuitive and accessible across various

devices. The design process often includes wire framing and prototyping

to map out the site's structure and interactions. Web designers also pay

Page | 17
attention to information architecture, graphics, multimedia, and the

implementation of responsive design principles to cater to diverse user

needs. Successful web design goes beyond the surface, encompassing

considerations of accessibility, adherence to web standards, and

collaboration with developers to bring the envisioned design to life. It is

an evolving field that demands continuous adaptation to emerging

technologies and design trends to create engaging and functional digital

experiences.

2.2.5 SOME PROGRAMMING LANGUAGES USED IN WEB

DESIGN

 HTML: HTML, which stands for Hypertext Markup Language, is the

standard markup language used to create and design web pages. It

provides a set of elements or tags that structure the content on a

web page. HTML tags are used to define various elements such as

headings, paragraphs, links, images, lists, and more. The picture

below illustrates a skeleton of HTML.

Page | 18
A skeleton of html body.

 CSS: CSS, or Cascading Style Sheets, is a style sheet language used to

describe the presentation of a document written in HTML or XML. It

defines how elements on a web page should be displayed, such as

their layout, colors, fonts, and other visual aspects. By separating the

content (HTML) from its presentation (CSS), web designers can

achieve a more organized and maintainable structure. The picture

below shows the general syntax of CSS.

Page | 19
a general syntax for css.

 JAVASCRIPT: JavaScript is a versatile and widely-used programming

language that plays a crucial role in web development. Initially

designed for enhancing the interactivity of web pages, JavaScript has

evolved to become a full-fledged programming language capable of

both client-side and server-side development.

 PHP: PHP, which stands for Hypertext Preprocessor, is a server-side

scripting language widely used for web development. It is embedded

within HTML code and executed on the server, generating dynamic

content that is then sent to the client's web browser.

Page | 20
2.2.7 ADVANTAGE OF WEB DESIGN

The primary advantage of web design lies in its ability to create visually

engaging and user-friendly online experiences. A well-designed website

not only captures the attention of visitors but also ensures intuitive

navigation, facilitating a positive user experience. Effective web design

goes beyond aesthetics; it encompasses considerations such as

information architecture, responsive layouts, and seamless interactivity.

A thoughtfully designed website enhances a brand's online presence,

promotes user engagement, and encourages desired actions, whether

it's making a purchase, filling out a form, or exploring content.

Furthermore, web design plays a crucial role in conveying a brand's

identity and message, contributing to user trust and loyalty. Overall, the

advantage of web design lies in its capacity to transform a digital space

into a compelling and functional platform that meets the needs and

expectations of both users and businesses.

Page | 22
Computer is an electronic device that only work on the data that is given

to it as input and give final result as the output. Web design best justifies

this statement. HTML, CSS, JAVASCRIPT and PHP are all programming

languages that works all together in order to meet a certain goal. HTML

is mainly used in creating the skeleton structure of a web application.

CSS is used for styling the contents of HTML indices, JavaScript is for

effects on both HTML and CSS. Lastly, PHP serves as the engine that

coordinate the function of the web page or contents with their

respective databases.
