Introduction
Electronic waste, commonly known as e-waste, refers
to discarded electronic devices or equipment. As
technology advances, the rapid proliferation of
electronic devices has led to an increase in the
generation of e-waste. These devices include
computers, smartphones, tablets, televisions,
refrigerators, and other electronic appliances that have
reached the end of their life cycle or become obsolete.
The management of e-waste is crucial due to the
potential environmental and health hazards associated
with improper disposal. Key aspects of E-Waste
Management are- Collection, Transportation, Sorting,
Segregation, Recycling, Disposal of Hazardous
Material, Awareness and Education, Policy and
Regulation.

Minimisation
of E-Waste
To minimize e-waste, consider
recycling old electronics,
donating functional devices,
and supporting manufacturers
with eco-friendly practices.
Additionally, advocate for
extended product lifespan and
responsible disposal methods.
Inventory
Management
Effective e-waste inventory
management involves tracking
incoming electronics, categorizing
them by type, assessing their
condition, and prioritizing recycling
or refurbishment. Regular audits
and documentation help in
monitoring quantities and ensuring
proper disposal methods are
followed.
Did you Know?
How is e-waste recycled in India?
Shredding, Sorting and Separation:
The collected material will be
processed and separated into clean
commodities to create new products.
The first step in e-waste shredding is
sorting and separating plastic from
metals and internal circuits.
Reduction of
Volume
Reducing the volume of e-waste
involves promoting recycling
programs, extending product
lifespan, and encouraging
responsible disposal. Consumer
awareness and proper electronic
waste management are key to
minimizing its environmental
impact.
Ways
12 ways to reduce and control e-waste are:
Recent trends in e-waste management.
Public health, Environment, and E-Waste.
Disposal and Management of E-Waste.
Purchase fewer items.
Organize your possessions.
Donate or give away your e-waste.
Return them to the store.
Sell unused products.
Modification of
Production Process
Changes in the manufacturing process can reduce
waste generation. Such changes are as under:-
(a) Improvements in the operation and
maintenance of equipment can help to produce
leakage and spells of materials employees should
be given training in correct operating and use of
equipments.
(b) Installation of more efficient process equipment
or modification of existing equipment can
significantly reduced waste generation better
equipment reduces the number of rejected
products thereby reducing the amount of material
work or disposed.
Recovery and
Reuse
Waste can be recovered on site at
an off site recovery facility or
through inter industry exchange.
Several physical and chemical
techniques which is electrolysis,
condensation, electrolytic recovery,
filtration and configuration are
available to reclaim waste materials.
Sustainable
Product Design
Efforts can be made to redesign the
product so that less hazardous
materials are used in manufacturing.
For example, flatter,lighter and more
integrated computers require less
amount of such materials. Use of
renewable materials and energy is
also helpful.Safer non-renewable
materials is another useful technique.
Did you Know?
Why is e-waste harmful to the
environment?
E-waste can be toxic, is not
biodegradable and accumulates in
the environment, in the soil, air, water
and living things. For example,
open-air burning and acid baths
being used to recover valuable
materials from electronic
components release toxic materials
leaching into the environment.
Disposal of
E-Waste

While handling e-waste,

companies can adopt the
following measures:
Use label materials to assist in recycling.
Standardise the components to make disassembling easier.
Create computer components and peripherals of biodegradable materials.
Encourage/Require green procurement for corporate buyers.
Opt for green packaging.
Share technology for manufacturing and de-manufacturing.
