The document discusses DepEd's new MATATAG curriculum in the Philippines which aims to improve learning for students. It will reduce the number of learning areas from 7 to 5, adding subjects like Makabayan and Peace Education, while removing Mother Tongue as its own subject. While the goal of updating the curriculum to be more relevant is understood, many are unhappy that Mother Tongue instruction will no longer be a subject, as it is an important way for young students to learn their traditional dialects. Overall, the curriculum changes aim to make learning more effective and ensure students gain useful knowledge, but there is disagreement around the removal of Mother Tongue as a subject.

improve learning for students. Position: Affirmative Affirmative: a) This curriculum involves adding more useful learning areas such as Makabayan and Peace Education b) Forming a new curriculum keeps the students’ way of learning up to date. c) The curriculum reduces the learning areas from 7 to 5 Negative: a) 70% of the current curriculum will be cut b) Mother tongue will be removed as a subject which upsets many people MATATAG makes learning more effective? According to recent news, DepEd is forming a new curriculum called MATATAG. It stands for “Make the curriculum relevant to produce job-ready, active and responsible citizens; Take steps to accelerate the delivery of basic education services and provision facilities; Take good care of learners by promoting learner well- being, inclusiveness learning, and positive learning environment; and, give support for teachers to teach better”. They claim that it will improve the method of education for learners. It will also resolve issues and problems in the current curriculum while keeping what the students learn up to date. It is said that they will reduce the learning areas from 7 to 5. These learning areas are: language, reading and literacy, mathematics, makabansa (nationalism), and good manners and right conduct. The learning areas were reduced in order to focus on the more useful subjects and topics. While many rejoiced to hear this news, there were also many who were upset that Mother Tongue would be removed as a subject. Apparently, Mother Tongue will no longer be a subject so students can focus on exercising literacy and numeracy. However, people did not like the fact that an important subject for younger students would be redacted. In conclusion, the curriculum will be updated to resolve issues and problems in the education system. Many are disappointed that mother tongue will only be a method of instruction and not a subject because it’s one of the only ways for younger students to learn their traditional dialect. Whether DepEd keeps Mother Tongue as a subject or not, it’s time for people to accept the fact the curriculum will be updated to make learning more effective for students. These changes will be done to make sure that the knowledge of students will be useful. Therefore, we, the people, should appreciate the agency’s effort to keep the student’s education up to date and helpful. We should all hope DepEd’s way of resolving the issues in education will be effective for learners. #
