HOW TO USE THE MODULES

Each module contains several lessons. To make the most out of them,
you need to do the following:

1. Scan the list of Expected Learning Outcomes to get an idea of the

knowledge and skills you are expected to gain and develop as
you study the module. These outcomes are based on the content
standards, performance standards, and learning competencies
of the K to 12 Curriculum for the Technical-Vocational-
Livelihood (TVL) track.

2. Take the Pre-assessment. Your score will determine your

knowledge of the lessons in the module. If you get 100% of the
items correctly, you may proceed to the next module. Otherwise,
you must go through the lessons.

3. Each Lesson aims to develop one of the learning outcomes set

for the module. It opens with a list of objectives that you are
expected to have accomplished by the end of the lesson. The
objectives are intended to unpack the learning outcome for the
lesson.
4. Read and understand the content in the Lesson Information
sections that make up a lesson. This component contains the
basic information that you need to know to be able to
accomplish the lesson objectives.

5. At the end of the lesson, take the Self-Check to find out how
much you have learned. If you do not get all the test items
correctly, go back to the Lesson Information. This will ensure
your mastery of basic information.

6. Perform the required Learning Activity, which may consist of one

or more tasks for you to accomplish. It is not enough that you
acquire content or information, but you must also be able to
apply what you have learned in real-life situations. Evaluate
your performance using the Scoring Rubrics.

7. At the end of the module, take the Post-Assessment to evaluate

your overall understanding about the lessons.

LESSON INFORMATION 1.1

NAIL STRUCTURE AND CONDITIONS

After reading this Lesson Information Sheet, you must be able

to identify the structure of the nail and its conditions.

Below is the nail diagram.

1.Lunula-the pearly colored and crescent-shape area of a finger or toe

nail
2.Cuticle-the overlapping epidermis around the nail. It is transparent
skin ,is called the true cuticle which remove during the manicuring
process.

3.Free edge- the part of the nail that can be filed and shaped. It is an
extension of the nail plate that overlaps the eponychium.

4.Matrix- the part of the situated directly beneath the cuticle. It

produce the cells that become the plate.

5.Nail bed-the part of the nail where the nail plate rest on ,also a
continuation of the matrix and its abundantly supplies with blood
vessels and nerves

6.Nail walls-the folds of the skin that overlap the sides of the
nail. They hold your nail in place and protect the nail plate edges

7.Nail plate-is the visible nail that rests on the nail bed up to the free
edge. This is made up of dead cells and a minimum amount of
moisture.

HOW DO WE CONDUCT A HAND AND NAIL ANALYSIS?

First we do visual checks. Look at the condition of the

skin by examining palms and back of the hands. Check
nails and cuticles for any signs of infection.

Next touch the hands. Check if the skin is rough or

smooth, cracks, infection, color of the skin

Look in between the fingers for any signs of irritation

Cuticles- excessively thick/ dry/cracked

Skin around nails- dry or bitten, any signs of infection

Check each nail- flexible, smooth, colour, free edge

(white),lunula (visible); strong, peels, breaks

Take a look at your hands. Do you have misshapen nails? Do

you have ingrown nails? How about brittle nails? Do you find difficulty
to grow your nails longer? If so, then there is a need for you to have a
regular hand and nail care maintenance.

Below are the following beneficial effects of hand spa:

Relaxes fingers, wrist and hand muscles.

Helps loosen tight hand muscles

Reduces scar tissue and adhesion that cause decreased finger

and wrist mobility.

LESSON INFORMATION 1.2

NAIL DISEASES AND DISORDERS

Did you know your nails can reveal signs to your overall health?
Have you noticed some abnormalities in your fingernails? Are you
aware that problems in the liver, lungs and heart can show up in your
nails? Do you bite your nails? Watch out and learn what your nails
will reveal!

Onychosis refers to any disease, disorder or condition of the

nails.

Having knowledge about infections caused by bacteria will

prevent the spread of infectious diseases, preserve the health of the
cosmetologist and the patron and appreciate the value of proper
sanitation.

Pus is the yellowish fluid that oozes from the wound. It is a sign
of infection. White blood cells attack the bacteria and consume them.
The pus contains blood cells, body cells and dead and living bacteria.
Bacteria may invade the body through cuts, scratches or punctures in
the skin or through any of the body openings.

Fungi are plant organisms that live on dead, decaying or living

matter. Some fungi are capable of causing serious infections but some
are harmful and beneficial.

Diseases may be considered contagious or non-contagious. A

disease becomes contagious or communicable when it spreads from
one person to another by direct or indirect contact. Some of the
common contagious diseases are tuberculosis, common cold,
ringworm, scabies, head lice, and virus infections. Coughing,
sneezing, unclean hands, eating utensils and salon equipment play a
role in spreading diseases. Diseases that are not able to be spread
from person to person are considered as non-contagious. Genetic
diseases, cancers, mental disorders, autoimmune diseases and heart
disease are some of the many diseases that aren't contagious.

Sterilization is the process whereby microorganisms are

destroyed. Equipment and tools found in salon are needed to be
sterilized. Sanitizing or sanitation refers to the physical or chemical
means used to keep the salon and its equipment as clean and free of
germs as possible in order to protect the health of the public.

us first identify its beneficial effects.
LESSON INFORMATION 1.3
BENEFITS OF HAND SPA TREATMENT

Take a look at your hands. Do you have misshapen nails? Do

you have ingrown nails? How about brittle nails? Do you find difficulty
to grow your nails longer? If so, then there is a need for you to have a
regular hand and nail care maintenance.

Below are the following beneficial effects of hand spa:

 Relaxes fingers, wrist and hand muscles.

 Helps loosen tight hand muscles

 Reduces scar tissue and adhesion that cause decreased finger

and wrist mobility.

LESSON INFORMATION 1.4

TYPES OF SPA TREATMENT

Most people think of massages and facials when they think of

spas and spa treatments, but spas have a much wider variety of
services that one might think. They also offer skin treatments for the
entire body, manicures and pedicures, hair-removal services as well
as other skin treatments that until recently were only available at a
doctor's office.

Face Treatments

Facials are skin-care treatments that include exfoliation, steam,

moisturizers, masks, peels and massages. They remove the dry, dull
skin cells from the skin's surface, massage the muscles to increase
circulation, remove clogged pores and completely hydrate the new,
fresh layer of skin. Some facials target specific problem areas such as
reducing puffiness and dark circles around the eyes. Others help with
anti-aging, such as applying collagen to the skin to help it tighten the
skin and reduce wrinkles.

Body Treatments

Facial skin isn't the only area that needs exfoliation and
moisturizing. Spas provide a variety of skin treatments for the entire
body: aquatherapy, body polishes, body wraps and vichy showers. In
aquatherapy, you soak in aqua-jet tubs with aromatherapy oils,
moisturizers and exfoliates. These soaks improve circulation and
exfoliate and hydrate the skin.

Body polishes are essentially body facials. The body is scrubbed

to slough dead skin cells and smooth out the skin, and then
moisturizers —usually cream — are massaged into the skin for
hydration. Salt scrubs are the most common body polishes, where
aestheticians use scrubs of sea salt for exfoliation. A salt scrub is
often the first step in a body-wrap treatment. After the body has been
exfoliated, it's then wrapped in either seaweed or mud to help extract
impurities from the skin and improve overall skin texture. After
removing the wrap, you rinse in a shower and then apply extra
moisturizer.

Vichy showers are sometimes used at the end of a body polish

or a body wrap, but they can be experienced alone as well. These
showers have five to seven shower heads that pour water on you while
you lie on a cushioned table. They help promote blood circulation as
well as skin hydration.

Massages

Massages are probably the most popular spa treatments, with a

variety of styles offered. A Swedish massage is the most common
method. The therapist uses massage oil to ease massaging in long,
smooth strokes and covers the parts of the body not being massaged
with a sheet. Sometimes the oils incorporate aromatherapy to further
aid in relaxation. Pregnancy massages are Swedish massages
performed specifically to help ease muscle tension in a mom-to-be's
lower back, shoulders and legs.

Deep-tissue massages use many of the same movements and

techniques from Swedish massage but apply more intense pressure to
release muscle tension and knots.

Hot-stone massages also implement the same long stroke

techniques in a Swedish massage, but therapists stroke the muscles
with heated basalt stones. The heat from the stones improves
circulation in the muscles and aids in injury healing. Sometimes
therapists will leave the hot stones lying on the spine for therapeutic
flow.

A reflexology massage focuses primarily on the feet. The

therapist will apply pressure to reflex points on the feet to release
blockages in the body systems and improve circulation.

Nail Treatments

Most spas offer both manicures and pedicures, nail treatments

for both hands and feet. These same treatments can be found at any
nail salon for less than spa prices, but spas often go an extra mile or
two for manicures and pedicures than a typical nail salon. In addition
to shaping and polishing nails, nail technicians at spas will also
exfoliate the skin, soften the skin, apply paraffin treatments and
perform warm cream and/or hot-stone massages.

Hair Removal

Waxing is the most traditional hair-removal technique that spas

offer. Aestheticians apply hot wax to the skin and then press a cloth
strip into the wax. They then quickly pull off the strip along with the
hairs captured by the wax. Waxing can remove hair from all areas of
the body, including chest hair, back hair, eyebrows, leg hair, upper-
lip hair and bikini areas. Some spas even offer full Brazilian waxes,
where all of the hair from the genital area is removed.
Sugaring is another hair-removal method similar to waxing. The
only difference is instead of wax, a sticky paste of sugar cream is
used. Threading is a technique from India and the Middle East that is
becoming more popular in Western cities as well. The aesthetician will
hold one end of a thread in her teeth and the other in her left hand.
She loops the middle of the thread through the index and middle
fingers on her right hand and then uses the loop to entrap hair and
pull it. Unlike waxing and sugaring, threading can only remove facial
hair.

Medical Treatments

Not all spas offer these, but more and more are starting to offer
skin treatments that used to only be available at a physician's office.
These treatments include microdermabrasion, CACI face-lifts, Botox
injections, Restylane, Juvederm, laser hair removal and pulsed-light
hair removal.

Microdermabrasion is a noninvasive procedure that uses a

spray of microcrystals to remove the outer layer of dead skin cells
from the skin surface. CACI (computer-aided cosmetology instrument)
face-lifts use an electronic device to tone facial muscles, which
smooths away wrinkles and fine lines, lifts sagging skin, plumps up
lips and lifts baggy eyes. Botox, Restylane and Juvederm are all
cosmetic injections to help reduce signs of aging such as frown lines,
crow's feet and wrinkles.

Both laser and pulsed-light hair removal permanently remove

hair from all parts of the body. The pulsed-light hair removal system
is a fairly new procedures that uses a beam of light to remove the hair
instead of a laser. It works faster and is also more comfortable than
laser hair removal.

LESSON INFORMATION 1.9

Hand Spa Treatment
Before you proceed with the steps in hand spa treatment, there
is a need for you to have a background on how to give basic hand
massage or hand and arm massage techniques as these are also a
part of the steps in hand spa treatment.

Basic Hand and Arm Massage Techniques

The hands contain many acupressure and reflexology points

which are associated with the organs and certain parts of the body.
Therefore hand massage should be included with each manicure
because it provides significant health benefits.

Procedure in Hand Massage

1. Hold the client’s hand in your

hand. Place a dab of lotion on the
back of the client’s hand and spread
it to the fingers and wrist.

2. Hold the client’s hand firmly.

Bend the hand slowly with a
forward and backward movement
limber the wrist. Repeat three times

3. Grasp each finger. Gently bend

each finger, one at a time, to limber
the top of the hand and finger
joints. As the fingers and thumb
are bent, slide your thumb down
toward the fingertips

4. With the client’s elbow resting

on the table, hold the hand
upright. Massage the palm of the
hands with the cushions of your
thumbs, using a circular
movement in alternate directions.
This movement will completely
relax the client’s hand.
5. Rest client’s arm on the table.
Grasp each finger at the base, and
rotate it gently in large circles,
ending with a gentle squeeze of the
fingertips. Repeat three times.

6. Hold the client’s hand. Massage

the wrist, then top of the hand with
a circular movement. Slide back
and with both hands wring wrist in
opposite direction three times.

7. Finish massage by tapering

each finger. Beginning at the base
of each finger, rotate, pause, and
squeeze with gentle pressure.
Then, pull lightly with pressure until
tip is reached. Repeat three times

8. Repeat steps 1-7 on the other

hand.

Procedure in Hand and Arm Massage

1. Complete hand massage.

2. Palm turned downward on the
table. Massage the arm from wrist
to elbow, using a slow, circular
motion in alternate directions.
Repeat three times. Palm upward
and repeat the same movements
three times.

3. Massage the underpart of the

arm to the elbow, using fingers of
each hand in alternate crosswise
directions. Repeat three times

4. Massage the top of the arm from

wrist to elbow. Apply thumbs in
opposite directions with squeezing
motion. Repeat three times.

5.Cup elbow joint in your hand.

Massage elbow with circular motion.
Repeat three times

6. Stroke the arm firmly in opposite

directions, from the elbow to wrist.
Finally, stroke each finger, ending
with a gentle squeeze of the
fingertips.

7. Repeat steps 1-6 on the other arm

LESSON INFORMATION 10

Perform Post Hand Activity

 Dispose waste products including used wax according to
OHSC and Department of Health requirements

 Sanitize and store tools and equipment

 Clean and sanitize work station for the next treatment

activity
Storing and Sanitation Techniques

Take a look at the things around you. Even though these things
may look clean in your eyes but what you do not know is that there is
still presence of contaminants. Contaminant is any substance that
causes contamination. Salon professional must always ensure safety
and sanitation in the salon to prevent and control infections and
contagious diseases although it is very impossible to keep the salon
free from all contamination

There is still a solution to prevent and control infections or

contagious diseases in the salon and that is through
decontamination. Decontamination is removing pathogens and other
substances from tools or surfaces.

There are three levels of decontamination and these are

sterilization, sanitation and disinfection.

Sterilization is the process of making an object germ-free by

the destruction of all kinds of bacteria and it is also the highest level
of decontamination. Sterilization is impossible since you cannot
sterilize all the tools and equipment used in the salon.

Sanitation means significantly reducing the number of

pathogens found on a surface and is also considered as the lowest
level of decontamination. Why is sanitation considered as the lowest
level of decontamination? Example is the hair in a comb. Hair is the
contaminant in the comb. How do you apply sanitation here? All you
have to do is to remove the hair from the comb and it is as easy as
that. That is why sanitation is the lowest level of decontamination.

Disinfection is the second level of decontamination next to

sterilization. Disinfection is very much applicable in the salon since
sterilization is not practical and sanitation alone is not enough.
Disinfection is the use of disinfectant and antiseptic. Disinfectant is
any substance or chemicals used to destroy bacteria but is not safe to
use on skin while antiseptic is an agent that prevents the
multiplication of bacteria. Since it is milder than disinfectant. It can
be used directly on the skin.

Any of these levels of decontamination must always be a part of

every nail care services and should be done before and after giving
nail services to your client. Proper waste disposal and proper handling
and use of chemicals are also of great importance when it comes to
post-service activity.

Service Maintenance Program

Now, after performing the hand spa treatment to your client, it is time
for you to do the following steps:

1. Dispose waste products including used wax according to

occupational health and safety rules and regulations.
2. Sanitize and store tools, supplies and equipment.
3. Clean and sanitize work station for the next treatment activity.

Good Housekeeping System (5’s)

Proper Waste Disposal refers to the process in keeping waste

materials or products in the proper place to avoid contamination.

Below are the steps in handling waste materials or products.

1. Seiri (Sort)
 TIDINESS, ORGANIZATION
 Taking out and disposing of unnecessary items
 Items that are not needed are thrown away or
disposed

2. Seiton (Systematize)
 ORDERLINESS
 Tools, equipment, and materials must be systematically
arranged for the easiest and most efficient access
 Arrange / Organize necessary items in good condition
 Assign a place for everything for easy access and returning of
the equipment, tools and even documents.

3. Seiso (Sweep)
 CLEANLINESS
 Cleaning even if things are not dirty. Regular
cleaning prevents things from getting too dirty that
it would be difficult to make it clean
 Indicates the need to keep the work place clean

4. Seiketsu (Standardize)
 STANDARDS
 Maintaining the workplace in high standard
housekeeping
 Allows for control and consistency. Basic
housekeeping standard apply everywhere in the
facility
 Housekeeping duties are part of regular work
routines

5. Shitsuke (Self-discipline)
 SUSTAINING DISCIPLINE
 Doing things spontaneously without having to be
told
 “Teach by doing”
 It is a good discipline to leave the workplace cleaner
than when it is found

Remember

Safety and security are important parts of the

housekeeping system.
