Lesson
1 Navigating a Webpage
Technology and internet has been embedded in childhood these years. One might
assume that using internet has become an innate skill. Yet, when we come to think of it, the real
challenge lies within. Surely, students already know that Mr. Google has the answer to all their
questions but when it comes to actually posing these questions and navigating the stream of
information that comes from clicking “search” students often have no idea where to begin. And
that’s a problem, knowing how to effectively search the internet is an essential skill that will last
a lifetime.
So now, where should teachers begin in teaching students how to navigate the world
wide web? This module will uncover some useful information that can be of great use to our
learners.
What’s In
Before we uncover the different parts of a webpage and how to navigate it, let us first focus on
what you know about the Internet and how it affects your lives.
Mind-Map
Write words or phrases that comes out of your mind when you hear the word INTERNET. Write
your answers on the spaces provided.

Internet Navigation
Directions: The sentences below talk about how to navigate a webpage. Fill in the missing words on the
lines below.
What is It
The internet is a very broad term to deal with. Now let us focus on one of the common
usages of internet which is web browsing or web searching. So, here are some important things
to remember.
On the other hand, a website is a collection of many web pages which are related to
one another. Web pages on a site are linked together through a system of hyperlinks, enabling
you to jump between them by clicking on a link.
Anatomy of a Webpage
✓ Masthead or Banner graphic - This is almost always a link back to the home page
— so if you get stuck, you can always click on it.
✓ Content of the Page – the content of the page depends upon the kind of page you
are visiting or looking at. These links can be text or image based.
✓ Footer - This act to tie up the site design and to avoid reader confusion because the
page looks like it just stopped. It is also the place to look for important, but less popular
information, like company details, usage rules, copyright notices, and contact
information. The footer is the place to look when you are wondering, “Are these people
for real?!”
✓ Navigation Bars - This may run horizontally across the top but is sometimes run
vertically along the side of page. Sometimes pages have both vertical and horizontal
navigation bars. These navigation bars allow the user to get to different parts of the
website. For example, a news website usually has different areas for domestic news,
international news, entertainment, sports, weather, and so on. And once you click to
one of these subsections, it will have its own navigation bar. For example, the sports
section might have links to basketball, badminton, volleyball and so on.
The internet is filled with lots of information. Typing a single word will give you hundreds or even
thousands of search results that will lead you to many articles to be read. This will burden the
one using since he or she needs to read to know the content of that search result.
Reading techniques as skimming and scanning help in sorting only the important details needed.
Skimming and scanning are reading techniques that use rapid eye movement and keywords to
move quickly through text for slightly different purposes. These two reading skill will greatly help
in exploring more resources for a specific topic.
5
Here are some tips on how to Skim:
• Read the title.
• Read the introduction or the first paragraph.
• Read the first sentence of every other paragraph.
• Read any headings and sub-headings.
• Notice any pictures, charts, or graphs.
• Notice any italicized or boldface words or phrases.
• Read the summary or last paragraph.
These two reading techniques will be of great help in navigating and exploring websites
especially if you are looking for specific information for your school works.
What’s More
________ After reading the information, click the “Back Button” to go back to the list
of websites.

5. If you are done using the browser, what are you going to click for you to exit the
application?
7. According to the Facebook post, are children below 12 years old allowed to participate in

What I Have Learned
Here are some of the most common navigation tools and website features:
1. Frames break up a Web page into different areas. Usually one of the frames will have a
menu bar that stays on your screen while you navigate from page to page through a site.
2. Headers, footers, and sidebars are found at the top, bottom, or along the sides of a page.
Often these features contain menu items, useful links, and important information about
the site.
3. Links are connections to other Web pages on other sites. A link is usually shown in brightly
colored, underlined text.
4. Menu bars are a collection of buttons that, when clicked, take you to other important pages
in a website.
5. Histories are lists that that keep track of the pages you have visited. If you get lost or want
to get back to a page you visited earlier, you can use the history list to get there.
6. Bookmarks/favorites are features that allow you to mark and save a list of useful pages
that you have visited. Once you create a bookmark, you can access that page with one
click of your mouse!
What I Can Do
A. Cooking Something
Directions: Search for the ingredients and steps on how to cook Chicken Adobo. Write the
steps on a separate sheet of bond paper. Then, indicate the source from where you got the
recipe.
9
B. Written Reflection on Skimming and Scanning
Directions: On a separate sheet of paper, write a paragraph that explains how you use
skimming and scanning in your daily life and in your academic work. Then, explain how you
could use skimming and scanning more effectively in either or both. Here is a framework to
help you organize your paragraph:
I can improve my use of skimming and scanning in my schoolwork and my day-to-day reading.
First, I currently use skimming in my schoolwork to ____. For example, I _______. I also use
skimming when I am reading ______ to ___________. This works well for me, but I think if I
also add _____ to my skimming, I . . .. Second, I currently scan texts when I want to . . .. . For
instance, I recently _______. I could use scanning more effectively by _____________. While
my skimming and scanning skills are_________________, I can see with some improvement,

Get COVID-19 vaccines on your own if you could afford it, Palace tells Pinoys
Published November 7, 2020, 12:50 PM
by Argyll Cyrus Geducos
Malacañang said that Filipinos who could afford to get the COVID-19 vaccine may do so themselves despite
the Universal Health Care (UHC) Law mandating the government to have all Filipinos vaccinated.
Presidential spokesman Harry Roque made the statement after President Duterte said that the government
“does not care” about the people who could afford the vaccine.
In a presser aired via State-run PTV-4, Roque said that the government will not stop Filipinos who want to
buy the vaccines themselves once it is available, noting there will probably be private companies that will
distribute them locally.
“Siguro nga pag lumabas na yung bakuna, meron pong mga private companies na magpapasok diyan at
meron naman tayong mga Pilipinong can afford (I think when the vaccine comes out, there will be private
companies who will distribute here and we also have Filipinos who can afford it),” he said.
“Yung mga can afford puwede naman po silang magpabakuna. Hindi naman natin sila pipigilan (Those who
can afford can already avail of the vaccine. We will not stop them),” he added.
Roque explained that it is the government’s strategy to give the vaccine for free to recipients of the Pantawid
Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps), frontliners, and the military and the police.
However, he said that the UHC Law states that every Filipino must be vaccinated.
“Ang istratehiya natin talaga yung 4Ps recipients natin, yung mga frontliners, pulis at mga kasundaluhan ang
mauuna, at ito po’y garantyado na babayaran ng gobyerno (Our strategy is to have 4Ps recipients, frontliners,
and the police and the military to receive the vaccine first and this is guaranteed free by the government),”
he said.
“Pero sang-ayon sa Universal Health Care law meron ding mandato na kinakailangan na bigyan natin ng
bakuna ang lahat ng Pilipino (But based on the UHC Law, we are mandated to give every Filipino the
vaccine),” he added.
President Duterte has recently named Presidential Peace Adviser Carlito Galvez Jr. as the vaccine czar who
will oversee all efforts regarding the acquisition, production, and distribution of the COVID-19 vaccines.
The Inter-agency Task Force (IATF) for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases has likewise
approved the national COVID-19 vaccine roadmap and formed a new cluster to implement the immunization
program.
Last month, President Duterte assured the public that he has already found the money to buy COVID-19
vaccines. According to Malacañang, an initial 20 million Filipinos will get the vaccine for free.
Roque had said that the estimated price for a vaccine is US$10 per dose. An individual should have two
doses of the vaccine.
