DESCRIPTIVE STATISTICS.
Descriptive statistics are summary statistics that quantitatively describes or summarizes features
from a collection of information. Common measures include mean, median, mode, range,
standard deviation and variance. They provide insights into the central tendency, dispersion and
shape of the data distribution.
Histograms and box plots visualize data distribution.
Descriptive statistics is broken down into measures of central tendency and measures of
variability.
Central Tendency measures the center or average of a data set.
The mean is the sum of all values divided by the number of observations.
E.g., 2, 4,6,2,7,9,10,8
Mean 2+4+6+2+7+9+10+8
8
Mean= 48
8
=6
The median is the middle number in a sorted ascending or descending list of numbers
To calculate for the median of the numbers above, you arrange it in ascending order
E.g., 2, 2, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10
The middle numbers are 6 and 7, since the middle numbers are two, you add the two numbers
and divide by two.
6+7 = 13
13/2 = 6.5
Therefore, the median number is 6.5
The mode is the most frequent occurring value.
The most frequent value of the above numbers is 2.
Measures of variability quantify the spread or dispersion of a set of data points. Common
measures include;
Range is the difference between the maximum and minimum values in a dataset.
Variance is the measure of hie far each data point in the set is from the mean.
Standard Deviation is the square root of the variance, providing a more interpretable measured
of the average distance between each data point and the mean
Interquartile Range (IQR) is the range of values within the central 50% of the data, calculated
as the difference between the third quartile and the first quartile.
These measures help to understand the variability and distribution of data points in a dataset.
