What is Family Functioning
Family functioning is de ned as the frequency of normal
family routines, effectiveness of family communication and
problem solving attitude between members and how well
family get along with each other.
It is very important for a child mental heath that the family
he lives in has a environment of family functioning, it help in
child mental growth in Problem solving attitude, creativity,
making friends in his own circle, setting boundaries,
communication skills and overall mental positivity in sub
conscious mind.

evaluating various aspects of how a family operates and interacts.
There are different models and tools available for conducting a

Dimensions of Family Functioning
These dimensions are the roles how family functions and how the child mental
heath directly bene ts.
• Family cohesion (Bonding): Positive and supportive interaction among family
members that is positively reacting to other members is very important, If the
child sees his family member ghting and quarrying each other this imprints in
this own behaviour.
• Affective Responsiveness: How the family responds emotionally in its
relationship determines the ability of the child to respond emotionally and to
express welfare and emergency feelings.
• Communication between family members to exchange feelings and information
also plays important role in family and child mental health.

• Problem-Solving: A family ability to mobilise to effectively solve
problem teach his children lots of skills like ability to solve problem,
communication regarding issues face by the child, solve this own
problems by making his own solutions, develop alternative actions
to avoid problem and monitor the problems going on in his life. Its
very important that the child shares his or her problems with the
parents.
• Boundaries: These are the rules by which family lives. Rules must be
clear the the child himself must see that his family is obeying by the
rules. This imprints the child mind with the importance of
boundaries and discipline.

Stage I: Transfer Communication and Information Review


1) We will review exis ng documenta on and engage in a transfer communica on with the
intake worker.
Stage 2: Conducting a Comprehensive Family Functional Assessment
2) Following this review, workers will meet with the family and begin the engagement process
that will ensure the family’s meaningful involvement throughout the case.
• 3) We will interview children, parents, and other relevant caregivers with special a en on
paid to the inclusion of fathers.

• 4) We will then meet with families and possibly sta from other relevant agencies to
coordinate case planning and create a plan for future communica on.

• 5) Specialized assessments (e.g. to address mental health concerns) will be carried out or
appropriate referral made for assessment elsewhere.
