Till 1857
India was ruled by east India
company, through its court of
directors and a Governor General.
Real power was board of control in
London, but due to lack of
communication, it’s decisions were
post facto

But after the revolt of 1857, parliament of Britain transferred

all the power from company to the crown, means to the
parliament itself by the government of india act 1858.
By 1858
English laid down an submarine
cable from London to India
through Red Sea for direct and
Level 1 speedy communication. By this
they started controlling minute
details, hence the post of
Governor General became weak.

Divide and rule policy
• British started the policy of divide and rule in India after 1858, for this
they started repressing the Muslims and favouring the Hindus.
• After 1870, British tried to turn the middle and upper class Muslims
against the national movements.

Backwardness of social services

• Social services like education, water supply, public health and
sanitation were completely backward in 19th century India.
• Main reason was, that British were spending almost complete
revenue on Army and administration to keep their empire safe.
• For eg:- in 1886 British collected 47 crore rupees as revenue, but they
spent 19 crore on army, 17 crore on administration, 2 crore on health
and sanitation and only 65 lakhs on irrigation works.
Racial antagonism by British
British started thinking, that they were superior than Indians
as a race.
Consequently, railway compartments, stations, waiting rooms,
parks, hotels, swimming pools were all reserved for
Europeans only.
