Technical information should always be available to the foremen and mechanics, because their
careful and constant adherence to the instructions is essential to ensure vehicle road-worthiness and
safety. In addition, the normal basic safety precautions for working on motor vehicles must, as a
matter of course, be observed.

4 Readiness code
Function
The readiness code is an 8-digit numerical code which indicates
the status of the exhaust emission-relevant diagnoses.
The readiness code is deleted whenever the fault memory is
erased or on interruption of the voltage supply. Therefore, only
clear the fault memory if a fault is stored.
If diagnosis has been carried out successfully for a system (e.g.
secondary air system), the corresponding numerical code digit is
set from 1 to 0.
During normal vehicle operation, the diagnoses are carried out at
regular intervals. Following a repair on an exhaust emission-rel‐
evant system, generating the readiness code is recommended
but not yet legally prescribed.
If the engine control unit, the throttle valve module or the elec‐
tronic throttle have been renewed in vehicles with automatic
gearbox, the kick-down point must be taught-in again

Display group 60 -Engine speed regulation- Adaptation of electronic throttle control system
• Ignition on, engine not running
7) Adapting engine control unit to throttle valve control module ⇒ page 143 .
Notes on display group 60:
♦ Matching the throttle valve control module is performed with
ignition switched on.
♦ Engine control unit is adapted to throttle valve module when
selecting display group 60 under function 04 “Basic setting”.
This adaptation must always be carried out when another
throttle valve module (or another complete engine) or another
engine control unit has been fitted.
♦ If voltage supply has been interrupted (battery disconnected),
adaptation must also be carried out, ⇒ page 139 procedure
after interrupting the voltage supply.
♦ The counter counts up to 8 in display zone 3 during adaptation.

ed so that it is not supplied with voltage.
In this condition the throttle valve is pulled into an emergency
running or default position by a spring in the throttle valve control
module. The values that both angle senders provide in this emer‐
gency running position are stored by the engine control unit.
The throttle valve is then opened by a predetermined amount. If
this value is achieved, the throttle valve positioner is again switch‐
ed so that it is not supplied with voltage. Now the mechanical
spring must close the throttle valve to the previously learnt emer‐
gency running position within a predetermined period (spring
test).
Then the throttle valve is closed by the throttle valve positioner
and the values, which are supplied by the angle senders in the
throttle valve control module are stored by the engine control unit.
If the engine control unit switches the throttle valve positioner so
that it is without voltage during normal operation, this is indicated
by the increased and hunting idling speed. The engine only reacts
slowly to accelerator changes.

– Connect diode test lamp -V.A.G 1527- using test leads from -
V.A.G 1594- to contacts 4 + engine earth of connector pulled
off from cylinder 1.
– Operate starter and check ignition signal from engine control
unit.
• LED must flicker.
– Repeat check on connectors for cylinders 2 to 5.
– Switch off ignition.
