June 2008, Paper II, Section A – Question #1

In the experimental setup in Figure 1, a variable a.c. voltage source, V 1, drives the primary of a
step down transformer of turns ratio 5000 : 600. A resistor, R = 8 Ω, is connected across the
secondary winding.

Table 1 shows the values obtained for V2 and V1 is varied from 0 V to 90 V.

Table 1
V1 / V 0 15 30 45 60 75 90
V2 / V 0 2.0 4.7 7.1 8.6 11 14

a) Use the readings from Table 1 to plot a graph of V 2 vs V1 on graph paper. (6 marks)
b) Find the slope, S, of your graph. (4 marks)
c) What does the slope of your graph represent? (1 mark)
d) Use your graph to determine the value of V2 when V1 = 50 V. (3 marks)
e) Calculate the current I2 in the secondary windings when V1 = 50 V. (3 marks)
f) Use the slope of your graph and the equation I1 = S I2 to determine the current I1 in the primary
windings (2 marks)
g) i. Calculate the power delivered to the resistor, R, by the secondary windings.
(3 marks)
ii. Calculate, also, the power input to the primary windings by the source. (1 mark)
h) i. State TWO major sources of energy loss in transformers (2 marks)
ii. Describe the constructional features of commercial transformers which minimize the losses
stated in part h) i. (2 marks)

June 2003, Paper III, Question #2

a) Draw a clearly-labelled diagram of a transformer and use it to explain the principles of its
operation. (8 marks)
b) A transformer is used to step down a voltage of 11 kV to 220 V. Given that the transformer
has 3200 turns in the primary coil, calculate the number of turns in the secondary coil.
(4 marks)
c) Another transformer is used to further step down 220 V to 110 V. Its input current is 3 A and
the output current is 5.6 A. Calculate its efficiency. (8 marks)

June 2001, Paper III, Question #5

a) i) Draw a labelled diagram of a dry cell.

ii) Draw a labelled circuit diagram showing how you would recharge a car battery.
(8 marks)
b) i) When fully charged a car battery can deliver 5 A at 12 V for 16 hours before it becomes
fully discharged. Calculate, in kWh, the energy stored when the battery is fully charged.

ii) If the battery can undergo 100 complete charge-discharge cycles before it 'dies'/fails,
calculate in kWh the total energy it can supply during its 'lifetime'.
(iii) Given that the cost of the battery is EC $200, calculate the cost per kWh for the delivery of
the energy in part ii). Explain why your answer does not represent the total cost of the energy
supplied. (12marks)

Figure 2 D.C. Motor

b) A 24 V d.c. motor was used to lift a small appliance of mass 25 kg from the ground to the
second floor of a multi-storey carpark. The floor is 30 m above the ground. The motor,
operating at 100 % efficiency, works at a steady rate and takes 5 s to complete the activity.
i) Calculate the power provided by the motor. (4 marks)
ii) Calculate the current drawn from the d.c. supply. (4 marks)
iii) If the power required to lift the appliance was greater, what effect would this have on the
value of the current? (1 mark)
Assume the voltage rating remains constant. [g = 10 N kg-1]
