PRE-ASSESSMENT

1.Define matter? Name 3 states

of matter.
2.Why can liquids flow but solids
cannot?
Learning Objective/Targets:

* Discuss matter and its three states.

* Compare and contrast between physical
and chemical changes of matter.
* Analyze different components of solution.
* Discuss the concept of the law of
conservation of mass.
Scientific Vocabulary

 Molecules  Solute
 Physical Change  Solvent
 Chemical Change  Mass
 Soluble substance
 Conservation
 Insoluble substance
 Destroyed
 Dissolve
 Solution  Created
• There are some solids that directly
change from solid to gaseous state.
This process is called Sublimation.
Ex: Camphor and Naphthalene.
To summarize

Physical Change Chemical Change

Is a change in form Is a change in substance

Evidence of change Evidence of change

● Change of state (solid to liquid, etc.) ● Change in colour
● Change of size (breaking, cutting, ● Production of an odor
dissolving) ● Production of a gas (like bubbles)
● Change of shape (bending, stretching,
moulding)

Example: Liquid water becomes solid ice, Example: Marshmallow becoming brown
glass breaks when heated
AFL 1

1. The amount of space occupied by the matter is called its _____________.

2.Name the process in which some solids directly change from solid to gaseous
state.

3. Why solids cannot be compressed easily?

4. Making glass is a physical or chemical change. Justify

Conservation of Mass
The mass can neither be created
nor destroyed but is transformed
from one form to another.
What is the law of conservation of mass?
• Physical changes are reversible and follow the law of
conservation of mass.

Chemical Change
• Mass is conserved during chemical changes. The mass of the
starting materials is the same as the mass of the end
products.
AFL 2

1. In a solution of sugar and water, sugar is ______ and water is _________.

2.What will happen to the level of water in a glass when we add salt in it?

3. In a cooking recipe, you mix flour, water and eggs to make dough. If you
weigh all the ingredients before mixing and then weigh the dough after mixing,
what would you expect to happen to the total mass? Name the type of change
which will occur after baking it ?

CRITICAL THINKING QUESTION

1. Is burning of candle a physical or

chemical change. Justify
2. What factors can affect how quickly
a solute dissolves in a solvent? Can you
think of any real-life examples?
