MEET JOHNNY DEPP

JOHNNY DEPP was born on June 9, 1963, in Owensboro, Kentucky. His
parents moved their four children to Florida when Johnny was young. At the
age of 12, his mother bought him a guitar and music quickly became his love.
Johnny decided to leave school at the age of 16 to follow a career in music.
He played guitar for a band called “The Kids” and moved with the band to
Los Angeles. They didn’t have immediate success and so Johnny started a
job as a salesman to earn some money. He got married at the age of 20 to a
make-up artist, Lori Allison. They got divorced quite soon, but Lori introduced
Johnny to the actor Nicholas Cage. He saw a future for Johnny in films and
persuaded him to try acting. Johnny made his first film A Nightmare on Elm
Street in 1984. After a couple of other small parts in films, Johnny worked
for three years in a TV series for teenagers called 21 Jump Street. Teenage
girls became big fans and Johnny appeared in popular magazines and on
posters. He was annoyed by this, because he wanted to be a serious actor.
Johnny has never appeared in just one type of film and he has always been
interested in playing different characters. In the early 1990s he played a series
of eccentric characters including Edward Scissor hands in the film of the same
name. Johnny has continued to act in a big range of films and has won the
respect of Hollywood, critics and of film fans round the world. In 1996 he took

LESSON 55

THE WORLD WE LIVE IN

There are many problems in the world today, and pollution is probably
the most serious one. There was a time when people weren’t worried about
it, but nowadays we are facing a different reality. It may be difficult to
believe that people can actually change the Earth’s climate. But scientists
think that the things people do that send gases into the air are making our
planet warmer.
Pollution contributes to the greenhouse effect, which makes the
Earth’s armosphere become hotter and hotter. This can cause the polar
ice to melt, thus raising sea levels and generating floods. These changes
may seem extreme, but they usually occur slowly over many thousands of
years.
We need energy to do things like drive a car, fly a plane, or make things
in factories. But we need to use energy wisely if we want to help slow global
warming. By turning off lights, the television, and the computer when you
are not using them anymore, you can help a lot. You can also save energy
by sometimes taking the bus, riding a bike, or walking. Another thing you
can do is recycle cans, bottles, plastic bags, and newspapers.
It’s clear that the Earth’s climate today is different from years ago and
that more and more we’re facing the risk of natural catastrophes such as
tsunamis, earthquakes, hurricanes, tornados, and other natural disasters.
It’s time for people to stop and think of their responsibility towards their
planet and their future.

1. Answer the questions:

a) What other title would you give to this text?

b) What’s the principal idea from this text?

c) There are many ways in which we can help our planet. Do you agree
with this? What can you do to contribute to that?

READ ABOUT FRED’S DAY AND TICK FROM 1-5 (√) THE CORRECT
ANSWER TO THE QUESTIONS.

It is usually a good job, but I’m having a bad day today. I don’t usually help

look after the kangaroos, too. When the other zoo keepers have a holiday, I
feed their animals. I really like feeding the crocodiles and the snakes. But my
favorite job is talking to the visitors and telling them about the animals.
But today everyone has a lot of work. Twenty schools are visiting the zoo
today. There will be a lot of people here so everyone has to help. Today, my
friend Tom is looking after my animals and his animals, too, and I am selling
tickets and helping Mrs. Smith in the restaurant. Mrs. Smith is cooking the
lunches and I am washing up and cleaning the tables.
