Preface
If you think that Teachers, Schools, and Society: A Brief Introduction to Education was written
to introduce you to the world of teaching, you are only half right. This book also reflects
our excitement about a life in the classroom and is intended to spark your own fascination
about working with children. We wrote this book to share with you the joys and the
challenges we feel about teaching, as well as the importance of fairness and justice in school
and society. With this fifth edition, our goals are unchanged. We work hard to provide you
with information that is both current and concise, and we work even harder to create an
engaging book—one that will give you a sense of the wonderful possibilities found in a
career in the classroom.
The primary intent of Teachers, Schools, and Society is to provide a broad yet precise
exposure to the realities of teaching and the role of education in our society. The text will
help you answer important questions such as: Do I want to become a teacher? How do I
become the best teacher possible? What should a professional in the field of education
know? How are schools and teaching changing? To help you answer those questions, we
offer a panoramic, diverse, and (we hope) stimulating view of education.
The text views education from several vantage points. In Part I, “Teachers and
Students,” we present the world of schools, teachers, and students from the teacher’s side of
the desk. Part II, “Foundations,” examines the broad forces—historical, philosophical,
financial, and legal—that shape the underpinning of our educational system. In Part III,
“Schools and Classrooms,” we explore the purposes of schools, daily life in and beyond
school, and the obvious (and not so obvious) curriculum taught in school. In this last
section, we also provide an overview and analysis of the reform movement and the many
curricular changes that are now so much a part of America’s schools. We conclude the text
with a variety of effective teaching strategies and practical suggestions to make your first
year in the classroom a success.
The fifth edition of Sadker/Zittleman’s brief Teachers, Schools, and Society retains and
builds upon the hallmark characteristics that made the fourth edition a best seller.

the Common Core and the arguments surrounding it. The text explores the Every
Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), the federal policy that replaces No Child Left Behind—
including discussion of how states may respond to changing responsibilities. The text
updates topics from the role of business in educational reform to the myths
surrounding our public schools. “Contemporary Issues” provides a

chapter focus on a specific issue in today’s schools, including but not limited to the
notion of gender identity challenges in the classroom, unconscious bias, merit pay, and
the reintroduction of single-sex public schools. Students are also given practical, current
instructional strategies in the “Teaching Tips” feature. We view this text as a living and
changing narrative of today’s educational issues.
• Social Justice and Equity. The text stresses the importance of fairness and justice in
school and society, focuses on the most crucial topic areas, and integrates the most
current issues in education.
• Focus on Fairness: Issues of social justice and equity are at the core of this text. These
pages examine the racial, economic, social, and gender issues that too often erect

barriers to equal opportunity.
• Diverse Voices and Experiences: Issues of multicultural education and diversity in
learning are treated as fundamental and are infused from the very first chapter (“The
Teaching Profession and You”) to the very last one (“Becoming an Effective Teacher”).
The authors argue that only through recognizing and appreciating diversity can
teaching be both effective and joyful.
• Standards and Testing. Important legislation and policies are thoroughly addressed,
including the arrival of national standards, the proponents and critics of the testing
culture, and new federal programs. There is also a section analyzing the problems of
high-stakes testing and discussing some of the alternatives to high-stakes testing.
• Connections to INTASC Principles. Online INTASC Reflective Activities and Your
Portfolio (RAPs) activities offer readers ways to apply text content and develop
portfolio artifacts that demonstrate their understanding of INTASC principles.
McGraw-Hill also offers a LearnSmart Praxis Study Tool, using adaptive technology to
help with Praxis exam preparation.
• Research Updated and Expanded to Reflect Education in America Today. As with
previous editions, the goal of the fifth edition is to expose you to the issues facing
education today; to ensure its currency, many new references have been added. This
new edition also provides updated discussions of school reform, including vouchers and
charter schools, the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), Common Core and national
standards, the success of educational reform in Finland, and new discussions such as the
unconscious bias we all carry – not a point of shame but a marker for moving forward.
Readers will also note the revised discussions of Carol Dweck’s work on fixed and
growth mindset theories, the impact of male and female brains on learning. There is an
important explanation of wealth and the business community on school reform—what
Diane Ravitch refers to as “the corporate reform movement.”
In addition to the updated statistics, charts, and graphs that you would expect in a new
edition, we have made some other interesting changes. We want this text to be the most
exciting, interesting, and useful textbook you have ever read, and to mirror the enthusiasm
that we feel about education. Along those lines, we have a little bonus for you in each
chapter, a little extra material which you may find helpful but will not be tested on. (Isn’t
that cool?) This edition includes two new features: “Digging Deeper” and “News Flash.”
These activities are called out in the text, but are found online, and pretty much do as you
might expect: allow the reader to dig deeper into an issue or to follow an issue that appears
in the news. “Digging Deeper” consists of an additional page or two and is found on the
textbook’s Online Learning Center. You may want to read this additional information, do
the exercises, and take some additional notes. Or, if your instructor allows, you can choose
to ignore it entirely (when’s the last time an author gave you that option?). It’s your choice
—and there will be no hard feelings on our part.
The “News Flash” feature sends you to a news story about the topic you are reading in
that chapter. Some questions are offered for you to consider, some additional insights are
given, and you get to experience the event the way the pubic does. We think it breathes

more life into the topic, and we hope you agree with us.
What’s more, this edition includes many of the features you enjoyed in the fourth
edition: greater attention to global and international education by way of marginal notes
that highlight facts and insights about education around the world. There are videos and
other relevant resources, and a wealth of practical strategies from teachers. Each chapter
begins with an opening quote, which sets the tone for that chapter. Connect now has video
links to TED talks, relevant YouTube, and other video segments related to concepts in the
text. Connect also has an expanded collection of portfolio and contemplative activities
reflecting the revised INTASC: Core Teaching Standards. These activities can add depth to
your learning. Here is a brief, chapter-by-chapter description of what’s new and updated in
the fifth edition:
Practical advice and insights about life in the classroom as today’s teachers experience them
are also included. Different approaches to teacher preparation are analyzed and updated
(TFA, teaching residences, online teacher preparation), along with the strengths and
weaknesses of each. A section titled “You Are Not Alone” is added to offer new teachers the
resources—human and otherwise—available to help transition into a teaching career. The
section “Your First Year and Beyond” has been moved from Chapter 11 to this first
chapter. This section has been edited to offer a peek into the teaching years ahead, and it
also includes a graphic depicting the stages of teacher development.

Chapter 4: Student Life in School and at Home
In recognition of how peer pressure, bullying, and relational aggression are significant
aspects of life in school, research and discussion on how these issues contribute to students’
academic and emotional well-being have been expanded. Research on how poverty and
homelessness intersect with students’ school experiences is updated, along with ways
teachers can best support the academic and emotional needs of these underprivileged
youths and their families. The section on sex education is also updated to include
descriptions of both sexual risk avoidance and comprehensive sex education curricula. The
growing epidemic of drug addiction in youth is also addressed.

walls has proved a direct cause of laceration. The seat of these
ruptures may be at any point, but it is most frequent in front of the
pelvic flexure, or in the floating colon, or directly in the seat of
impaction.
Symptoms. The attack comes on suddenly, perhaps in connection
with some special accident or injury, and is manifested by violent
colicy pains which show no complete intermission. In many respects
the symptoms resemble those of complete obstruction of the bowel,
there is a suspension of peristalsis, rumbling, and defecation, a
tendency to roll on the back and sit on the haunches, an oblivion of
his surroundings and pain on pressing the abdomen. Usually the
shock is marked in the dilated pupil, the weak or imperceptible
pulse, the short, rapid breathing, cold ears, nose and limbs and the
free perspirations. Tympany is usually present as the result of
fermentation. Signs of infective peritonitis and auto-intoxication are
shown in the extreme prostration, unsteady gait, dullness and
stupor, and general symptoms of collapse. The temperature, at first
normal, may rise to 105° or 106° as inflammation sets in, and may
drop again prior to death.
Termination is fatal either by shock or by the resulting peritonitis
and auto-intoxication. Exceptions may exist in case of adhesion of
the diseased intestine to the walls of the abdomen and the formation
of a fistula without implication of the peritoneum.
RUPTURE OF THE INTESTINES IN
RUMINANTS.
From blows of horns, tusks, etc., from rectal abscess. Symptoms: colic, resulting
in septic peritonitis and sinking. Treatment.
Lesions of this kind usually come from blows with the horns of
others. They may lead to artificial anus as in a case reported by Rey,
or the formation of a connecting sac as in that of Walley. In a case
seen by the author a large abscess formed above the rectum, from
injuries sustained in parturition. This ruptured into the gut leaving
an immense empty cavity in which the hand could be moved about
freely, but which gradually contracted so that the cow made a good
recovery.
André furnishes an extraordinary record of rupture of the colon,
blocked by a potato. It seems incredible that a potato could have
traversed the stomachs and intestine without digestion.
The symptoms are those of violent colic suddenly appearing in
connection with some manifest cause of injury, and going on to
septic peritonitis and gradual sinking.
Treatment is manifestly useless excepting in the case of some such
fortunate condition as in the case of abscess of the rectum in which
the free use of injections and the antisepsis of the abscess cavity
proved successful.
LACERATION OF THE INTESTINE IN
SWINE.
This is rare and appears to have been observed only in connection
with scrotal and ventral hernias, with adhesion. It may lead to an
artificial anus which in its turn may cicatrise and close, or to the
discharge of fæces into the peritoneal cavity with fatal effect. If seen
early enough, laparotomy with suture of the bowel and careful
antisepsis will be indicated.
LACERATION OF THE INTESTINE IN
CARNIVORA.
Capacity adapted to ingesta, rich and nutritious food improves breeds, excessive
filling renders paretic, dilates; obstructions, impactions, strangulations, hernias,
invaginations, twisting, tumors, compressions, calculi, lowered innervation,
impaired circulation, verminous aneurism, peritonitis, persistent umbilical vesicle
in horse and ox, hernia of mucous through muscular coat, cæcal dilatation, colic,
rectal, with atresia ani, diseased end of cord, retained fæces. Symptoms: colics
after meals, abdominal and rectal exploration, softer than impaction. Treatment:
empty mechanically or by laxatives, demulcents, kneading, stimulants, nux
vomica, ergot, barium chloride, eserine, rich concentrated food, electricity,
enemata, laxatives.
