Adopted from Mendeley official presentation
Background
• Academic writing is an important skill for us (students,
lecturer, and researcher)
• Good academic publication should follow the format
correctly, including the citation and bibliography format
• There are standards to follow in academic writing, including
citation style such as:
– APA
– Chicago manual of style
– Harvard reference format
– IEEE
– Nature
– Etc.

Problems
• Format:
– It’s not an easy task to format a citation and
bibliography manually
– It’s difficult to insert new citation in the middle of the
paper manually with a numbered style such as IEEE or
Nature
• Collaboration:
– How to manage the references of a research team?
– How to work on the shared references?
– Etc.

4/25/19 3
Alternatives to Manual Way
• Use reference tools in Microsoft Word
– We have to enter the references manually
– Doesn’t have import function
– Doesn’t support collaboration
• Use reference management tools
– Zotero (not free)
– Mendeley (free for personal use)
– EndNote (not free)
– Etc.
