CE 471: Water Resources Engineering-III

Class Test 2, 4th Year 2nd Semester, Section B, Spring 2020

Marks: 20 Time: 20 min

Instruction: Student ID must be written on top of each page of the answer script.

1. Explain why soil water tension increases as soil moisture content decreases. (3)
2. Give a comparison between Time Domain Reflectometry and neutron method of soil
moisture measurement. (4)
3. A T m thick saturated clay layer overlies a water-bearing formation. The pressure heads at
the top and bottom of the clay layer are 0 and h m respectively. Measurement shows that
the clay layer has a hydraulic conductivity of k mm/h. Calculate the flow of water in m3/s
through the clay layer in an area of A ha. (5)

T = 10, h = 15, k = 0.4 and A = 200 for student ID: 16.02.03.066 to 16.02.03.096
T = 15, h = 20, k = 0.5 and A = 250 for student ID: 16.02.03.097 to 16.02.03.114
T = 20, h = 25, k = 0.6 and A = 300 for the rest

4. The field capacity and permanent wilting point of an A- ha wheat field are 27% and 12%
respectively. The bulk density of the soil is ρ g/cm3 and the effective root zone depth is D
m. Determine the net depth of irrigation if the allowable depletion is 55%. Also determine
the time required to irrigate the field with a stream of Q l/s assuming that the water-
application loss is 25%. (8)

A = 0.4, ρ = 1.35, D = 0.8 and Q = 25 for student ID: 16.02.03.066 to 16.02.03.096

A = 0.5, ρ = 1.40, D = 0.9 and Q = 30 for student ID: 16.02.03.097 to 16.02.03.114
A = 0.6, ρ = 1.45, D = 1.0 and Q = 35 for the rest
