NEW YEAR, NEW LOOK!
As we enter a new year, we’re upgrading our savoury packaging in GB stores. Note – this will follow at
a later date for NI/ROI stores. We will keep you updated.

What’s happening?
We’ve redesigned the packaging for our savoury products into two different categories – Classics and
Deli. The new sleek designs highlight the difference between the two categories and will look great in
your fridges.
 The new designs will be in store for launch date, Thu 4th Jan. Sell through your current stock of
the products before displaying the new versions.
 To support the new packaging, you will also receive new POS in your January Marketing Box
with the new branding.
 Note – not all stores will stock the full Deli range. Check the Store Banding List in the January
2024 COLIN folder to check if your store needs to follow the ‘Busy’, ‘Medium’, or ‘Quiet’
Planograms. The January Planograms can be found in your Marketing Brief in the Marketing
Box and on COLIN.

What are the two new categories?

So, what’s the difference between the two categories? Read the below descriptions so
you can let your customers know if they ask.
Deli Favourites – The very best ingredients, handcrafted for a taste of the
Mediterranean. These premium products will be mostly sold in ‘Busy’ stores.
Classics – Forever favourites, made with quality ingredients, inspired by European
flavours.

4
CAMPAIGN FOCUS
We’re kicking off the January campaign by celebrating the old with the new. Some of our classic,
customer favourite products will be featured on POS to remind customers how great they are! We’re
also promoting our new and improved porridge, the perfect winter warmer, and our delicious new
Deli products (‘busy’ stores only).
We’re taking the opportunity to feature our long loved Classico coffee. You’ve done a fantastic job
selling our Single Origins/Winter Blend over the last couple of years, and you should continue to upsell
as much as possible. You will still be displaying some Winter Blend POS, but by also showcasing our
Classico blend, we’re celebrating our coffee and brand heritage. Customers can trust our brand,
after serving our expert coffee for 27 years!

FOOD & BEVERAGE LAUNCHES

Following the success of last January’s Caramelised Biscuit Latte, this year we
are back with a new limited edition Honey Oat Latte to carry customers
through the winter season.
Our food focuses for January are on two main areas – perfect porridge and
new Nero Deli savoury items.
1. There is always time for porridge! We are relaunching our porridge menu
with FOUR exciting new topping options and THREE recipe suggestions for
customers to try out or build their own.

What is your go to topping - crunchy banana chips or smooth almond butter?

2. In the Prepared for You fridge we are building on our unique and delicious Nero Deli range
with two extravagant new Italian hot eats. Prepare to be transported to Italy on your lunch
break! These additions tie in nicely to our packaging redesign – see above for more
information. Note that these products will only be available for ‘busy’ stores.

5
NEW BEVERAGE
It’s January, the weather is still chilly, and our customers are looking for a hug in a mug (or glass!) to
take them through the winter days. Say hello to our new limited edition Honey Oat Latte.
You will receive a recipe card showing you how to make these drinks in your January Marketing Box,
with a copy saved in the January 2023 COLIN folder too.

HONEY OAT LATTE

Hot & Iced

A new and refreshed Nero breakfast offering! A healthy, nutritious, and warm
breakfast option for the colder days! We are re-launching the way we serve porridge
with new toppings and recipe suggestions for customers to enjoy in the cold winter
months. Read below to find out more about the changes and new recipes!
A recipe card for how to serve new toppings is available in the January 2024 COLIN
folder. Print this and store it by the till for handy use. You will receive a printed version with the extra
label delivery from Mon 15th Jan. Please note the porridge recipe card is included in the checklist for
your January Marketing Box, but this is incorrect.
There will be a new online learning module and quiz on the Learning Hub too! Remember, when it’s
done right, customers will keep coming back for more.

Marshmallows – Best Practice
We were made aware of a few stores reporting quality issues with
our marshmallows. To ensure the best quality marshmallows please
follow the best practice tips below:

 Marshmallows should be stored in a dry and cool place.

 Keep the case or storage jar out of direct sunlight or warm areas
such as next to ovens.
 Do not store marshmallows in fridges.
 Make sure the storage jar is completely dry before filling with
marshmallows. Any moisture in the jar will make the marshmallows
stick together.
 Ensure scoops are completely dry before scooping
marshmallows.
 In between uses, make sure the lid is placed on jar securely.

Follow the instructions below to apply the sticker correctly on your menu board.
 Wipe the menu board with a clean damp cloth to remove any dust and debris. DO NOT
use any chemical cleaners as this may damage the printed menu board. The board then
needs to dry before you apply the new sticker.
 Before installation, unroll the new menu sticker on a clean, flat surface and let it acclimate
to the room condition.
 With the image side down on a flat surface, peel back the release liner approximately
10cm or 4in.
 Fold the liner/backing paper firmly to give a strip of exposed adhesive.
 Position the graphic and press the adhesive onto the surface. Take care to make sure this is
straight.
 Beginning from the top edge and working horizontally, use the squeegee with firm,
overlapping strokes to apply the graphic. Tip: Move from the centre outwards to the edges
to avoid trapped air.
 Continue to remove the liner and apply the graphic in approximately 20cm or 8in
instalments.
 Apply enough pressure to give a good bond between the adhesive and the back board.
 Go over the whole graphic and check there are no pockets of trapped air. If these cannot
be squeezed out, a sharp knife can be used to create a tiny hole and allow the bubble to
be pushed flat.
 Give edges an additional squeegee to ensure good adhesion and avoid lifting.

Octopus Energy Partnership
Exciting news! We’re teaming up with Octopus, the UK’s favourite
energy supplier. Soon, we'll be launching some exiting initiatives
together, starting with ‘Octoplus’, their loyalty program where we will
be featured as their premium coffee benefit.
‘Octoplus’ customers will get a weekly reward of a free barista-made
drink. The free drink QR code located on the Octopus App is
processed in the same way as our other vouchers and can be
redeemed against any standard hot or iced drink, including alternative milks. Octoplus customers will
be able to enjoy their free drinks at Caffè Nero stores in England, Wales, and Scotland. We look
forward to sharing more news on this exciting new partnership in the New Year!

PEOPLE UPDATE
Store Manager Reviews
Between January-March 2024, your Area
Manager will schedule a review with you. This is
an opportunity for you to share how you are
getting on and what’s on your mind. Your review
is designed to be conversational, and you’ll be
asked to focus on how this year has gone for
you, what have you learnt, and what are the
plans for both you and your store moving
forward. The following documents are available
on COLIN to help plan for your conversations:
 Store Manager Reflection Document
 Guidance for all

The documents can be found in the HR > PDR & Coffee Chats section of COLIN. All completed
conversations should be returned to your People Partner no later than 31st March 2024. A copy of the
Reflection will be saved into your file. If you have any questions, please contact your People Partner.

Team Reviews
Also, during this time, we would encourage Store Managers to hold a review with your team
members. This is a great opportunity for you to take some time out and meet with your team
members individually. We know you are doing everything you can to look after your teams but setting
some time aside to chat about how they are, what they have learnt, and what they would like to
achieve in their career with Caffè Nero is massively important. It is also your opportunity to set them
some goals and agree how you will support their ongoing development.
The following documents are available on COLIN, to help plan for your reviews:

NERO 90 UPDATE
We’re nearly at the end of our first Nero 90 incentive – only
16 days to go. Let’s keep on going! Delivering great service
leads to happy, satisfied customers. That means they come
back more often and spend more money with us. Happy
customers will give you a better customer score, and you,
your team, and your area can earn more in the incentive!

Remember – “look at me, smile at me, talk to me” is an easy way to remember how to greet
customers when they come to your store. Say hello, tell them you’ll be right with them, and smile – it
can make a huge difference.
Announcing the Winners
In early January we will be announcing who, and which area has won in the incentive. Once this first
phase ends, we’ll total up the scores and share them on Yapster, so keep an eye out. Stores that
achieved 90 during the incentive period will receive the extra money in the bank in early January.
The Next Phase of Nero 90
The first run of Nero 90 may be ending on 31st December, but the promotion will carry on! Phase two
starts on Mon 1st Jan, so you can still earn extra cash and win a team night out by delivering great
service. Here’s a reminder of how it works:

 Our Store Managers and Holding Managers can earn 25% (previously 20%) of their quarterly
bonus entitlement if they achieve the Customer Satisfaction Score of 90 or more as an
average over their current bonus quarter.
 Our hourly paid team members (except for Holding Managers) can earn an additional
amount for every hour worked in any week where the store achieves a Customer Score of 90
or higher. The additional amounts that team members can earn per hour are as follows:
• Baristas and Shift Leaders – 15p per hour
• Assistant Managers /MITs/Future Managers – 30p per hour
 As well as the extra cash you can take home from the incentive, don’t forget we have a
fantastic opportunity for the most improved store from each Area! A legendary team night out
could be yours.
So, keep service front of mind, and make your store famous for it! Remember there are videos on
Yapster full of top tips on how to give great service, and why it’s important. Give them a watch for
some inspiration.

Nero 90 Poster
Don’t forget to have your Nero 90 poster up on your
wall back of house. Print your weekly reports and
put them in the pockets of the poster. Tracking your
progress will help you set targets, engage your
team, and make it a habit!

MAINTENANCE UPDATE
Grinder and Tamper Troubleshooting
Carrying out the instructions in the troubleshooting guides, regularly using super lube on your tampers,
and clearing blockages on your grinders will help reduce the number of issues you have with these
vital pieces of equipment.

Did you know?

 Did you know the average cost to repair a grinder is £71.92?

 Following the End of Day Requirements and Tamper Cleaning can help prevent issues with
your equipment.
 The same troubleshooting applies for your Single Origin grinders.
 There are videos for some of these cleaning and troubleshooting steps available. Just go to the

Coffee Machine Troubleshooting

The most logged coffee machine issue is coffee machine leaking.

Most of the time this issue can be resolved in minutes without needing to wait for an engineer. If the
machine is leaking on the left-hand side and the leak gets worse every time you use the coffee
machine, the chances are that the waste is blocked.

How to clear the coffee machine waste pipe:

 Remove the drip tray and you will see, between the hot
waterspout and the first coffee handle, there’s a drain
cup/funnel which leads to the waste pipe.
 In your coffee toolbox, there’s a blue pipe. This blue pipe
fits perfectly through the drain cup and down the waste
pipe. Push the pipe through a few times. This should clear
any blockages and stop the leak.
 Replace the drip tray ensuring the drain cup is directly
under the hole between the hot waterspout and the first
coffee handle. If it’s not aligned, you will continue to see a
leak.

Having followed all these steps, if you still have a leak coming
directly from the coffee machine, please log a job on Verisae
under coffee machine leaking.

25
If the leak is appearing from your knockout drawer or under your fridges, the main drain on your bar is
most likely blocked, please log a job on Verisae under drainage. You’ll be able to find tips and tricks
to help in the meantime using the Drain Flushing guide in the troubleshooting folder on COLIN.

Did you know?

 It costs £106.83 for an engineer to attend your store for your coffee machine if it’s found to be
a cleaning issue rather than a fault with the machine.
 Replacement tools/parts for your coffee machine toolbox can be ordered from the Mulmar
Order Form and Jaguar Order Form surveys on COLIN.
 There are videos for some of these cleaning and troubleshooting steps available. Just go to the
Learning Hub > Resource Hub > CN Coffee > scroll down to Equipment > select your guide!

PROFIT PROTECTION UPDATE

Preparing to Stock Count and Setting up Storage Locations
How to prepare for stock count
An accurate stock count is a vital part of inventory and margin accuracy. Follow these guidelines
below before, during, and after the stock count to help you count quickly and accurately.

Before stock count day

 Customise the storage locations in Crunchtime to match the set up in your store.
 Organise your stock room shelves in line with order on Crunchtime.
 Tidy up all back of house areas, putting all similar products together.

On stock count day

 Restock grab items, drinks, and merchandise lines throughout the day using open cases.
 Leave unopened cases sealed unless necessary.
 Only trained team members to conduct the count.
 Make a note of your previous SOH Value and write down for comparison later.

During the count

 After final restocking, back of house areas can be counted and blocked off. Let everyone
know not to restock again.
 Empty and organise products combining open cases if needed.
 Count the stock back into the freezer.
 Do not count the front of house area until after the store has closed.

Equals Update Deadline

Incorrectly recorded or unreconciled expenses can lead to discrepancies in the profit and loss
statement, impact margin calculations, and create additional workload.
Here are some key points to remember:
 Select the correct category for each receipt.
 Retain receipts for 12 weeks and attach them to the WSBS.
 Ensure that all receipts reflect the appropriate VAT charges, if applicable.
 Window cleaners must provide a receipt for their services.

If you have any questions, refer to the FAQs on Yapster.

Please make sure all your equals card petty cash transactions for November have been correctly
coded and annotated. The deadline to complete this is Thu 11th Jan.
