WHY STUDY ART APPRECIATION?
Art Appreciation is a three-unit course that develops
student’s ability to appreciate, analyze, and critique works of art
through interdisciplinary and multimodal approaches. This course
equips students with a broad knowledge of the practical,
historical, philosophical, and social relevance of the arts in order
to hone student’s ability to articulate their understanding of the
arts. The course also develops student’s competency in
researching and curating art as well as conceptualizing, mounting,
and evaluating art explore the diversity and richness and their
rootedness in the Filipino culture.
ART DEFINITION
• derived from the Latin word "ars" - ability or skill -J.V. Estolas
• from Italian word "artis" - craftmanship, skill, mastery of form,
inventiveness, form+ideas, material+technique - A. Tan
• a product of a man's need to express himself - F. Zulueta
• communication of ideas and feeling through sensuous medium, color,
sound, bronze, marble, wood, and film - C. Sanchez
• brings life in harmony with the beauty of the world - Plato
• attitude of spirit and state of mind - a shaping of matter to new
and more significant form - John Dewey
• the skillful arrangement of common but significant qualities of
nature such as colors, sounds, lines, movements, words, stones,
wood, etc. to express human feelings, emotions, or thoughts in a
meaningful and enjoyable way - Panizo & Rustia

• UTILITARIAN FUNCTION - through art, man now lives in comfort and happiness
(modern shelter & living, landscaping, entertainment, personal ornamentals,
transportation, etc.)
• CULTURAL FUNCTION - art transmits and preserve skills & knowledge from one
generation to another
• SOCIAL FUNCTION - through civic and graphic arts, man learnes to love and appreciate
one another; fosters international understanding and cooperation among nations
