 Modifier pada ICD-9 CM
 setiap kata benda atau kata sifat yang terdaftar di dalam leadterm disebut modifier.
 Terdapat 2 jenis modifier : Nonesensial Modifier ditemukan dalam tanda kurung
Essential Modifier adalah deskriptor yang
memiliki efek pada pemilihan kode. Modifier ini
menjelaskan perbedaan penting dalam
letak/tempat atau teknik bedah. Ketika istilah
utama (main term) hanya memiliki satu
modifier itu merupakan essential modifier,
modifier terletak pada baris yang sama dengan
istilah utama (main term), dipisahkan dengan
koma. esensial modifier disebut sebagai
subterm ketika istilah utama (main term)
memiliki lebih dari satu esensial modifier.
setelah istilah dan subterm utama. Bila istilah kurung ini
ada dalam deskripsi prosedur, hal itu tidak berpengaruh
pada pemilihan kode yang tercantum untuk istilah utama
(main term)
Misalnya, untuk menemukan kode Endarterektomi Aorta
Ascending dalam Indeks Abjad, pilih "Endarterektomi" sebagai
istilah utama, dengan “Ascending" dan "aorta" sebagai
modifier.
Dalam contoh di atas, 38.10 digunakan untuk endarterektomi.
Namun endarterektomi aorta, endarterektomi aorta ascending
atau endarterektomi aorta desendening diberi kode 38.14.
Modifier esensial atau subterm "aorta" mempengaruhi pilihan
kode dan Modifier Nonesensial “ascending" tidak
mempengaruhi kode. 39
 Petunjuk-silang (cross-reference):
Suatu petunjuk silang untuk istilah atau persamaan
dari suatu tindakan, sama seperti dalam klasifikasi
penyakit atau ICD 10. Terdiri dari tiga macam:
1. Petunjuk silang Lihat (See) merupakan sebuah
petunjuk yang jelas untuk melihat di tempat
lain. Ini digunakan dengan istilah yang tidak
menjelaskan jenis prosedur yang dilakukan.
2. Petunjuk silang Lihat juga (See Also)
mengarahkan untuk melihat istilah utama yang
lain jika seluruh informasi yang dicari tidak
berada pada istilah utama yang pertama
dimasukkan.
