Coalition of Services of the Elderly (COSE)

"To care for those who once cared for us is one of the highest honors," says Tia Walker,
author of the book. This is a remark that demonstrates the need for caring for the elderly, which
is why COSE was founded. Basically, COSE is a non-governmental organization (NGO) in the
Philippines that has been working with seniors since 1989. They are primarily concerned with
the establishment and strengthening of older persons' organizations (OPOs), as well as advocacy
and relationship building. Whereas, they promote community-based programs for older people,
such as health care, residential care facilities, age-friendly and diverse livelihoods, and
catastrophe risk reduction and management that are inclusive. They also work with other
humanitarian volunteers to address the difficulties and concerns of older people in humanitarian
crises or catastrophes. Through its annual Sampung Ulirang Nakatatanda (SUN)/Ten
Outstanding Older Persons Awards, COSE commemorates the outstanding contributions of older
people in society. Furthermore, COSE is a certified and registered Social Welfare and
Development Agency, as well as a member of numerous international and national humanitarian
and development networks.

The Coalition of Services for the Elderly (COSE) holds paramount importance as a
unified force dedicated to enhancing the well-being of the elderly population. By bringing
together diverse services under a single umbrella, COSE ensures a holistic approach to
addressing the multifaceted needs of seniors. This coalition plays a pivotal role in advocacy,
championing the rights and dignity of the elderly at both community and policy levels. Through
efficient coordination and resource pooling, COSE maximizes the impact of its initiatives,
providing comprehensive support ranging from healthcare to social services. Ultimately, COSE
serves as a beacon for age-friendly communities, fostering a collective commitment to improving
the quality of life for the elderly.

To enhance the Coalition of Services for the Elderly (COSE), several recommendations
can be considered. Firstly, fostering stronger partnerships with local community organizations
and government agencies can broaden the reach and impact of COSE's services. Secondly,
implementing technology-driven solutions could improve communication and accessibility for
elderly individuals, ensuring they can easily access the support they need. Thirdly, conducting
regular surveys and assessments of the elderly population's evolving needs will enable COSE to
adapt and tailor its services effectively. Fourthly, investing in ongoing training for staff and
volunteers to stay updated on best practices in elder care can further enhance the quality of
support provided. Lastly, promoting greater public awareness through outreach programs can
strengthen COSE's advocacy efforts and garner increased support for the elderly within the
community. These recommendations aim to address specific aspects of poverty, exclusion, and
invisibility, fostering an environment where older people can lead dignified lives.

faced by the elderly and championing their rights in society. Ultimately, Sinag Kalinga stands as
a pillar of support, embodying the significance of nurturing a society that respects, values, and
empowers its senior citizens. To enhance the impact of the Sinag Kalinga Foundation for Senior
Citizens, here are the recommendations to establish strategic partnerships with healthcare
institutions, fostering collaborative efforts to expand and improve medical services tailored to the
unique needs of elderly individuals. Introducing technological innovations within the program
can enhance communication, facilitate virtual consultations, and ensure accessibility for seniors,
especially those in remote areas, thereby broadening the reach of the foundation's services.
Implementing regular wellness and educational programs can empower seniors with knowledge
about healthy aging practices and create a supportive community environment. Developing a
comprehensive volunteer training program can enhance the skills of those involved in
caregiving, ensuring a higher standard of care for elderly beneficiaries. Finally, initiating
targeted public awareness campaigns can attract more volunteers, donors, and community
support, allowing the foundation to scale its impact and provide assistance to a greater number of
senior citizens in need. Through these recommendations, Sinag Kalinga can continue to evolve
as a transformative force, ensuring the sustained empowerment and well-being of the elderly.
