1. Butyl alcohol 18 000 lb/hr and 170°F is cooled at 140°F with cooling Orthoxylene heated
from 100°F at 150°F in a shell and tube heat exchanger. Available for this duty is a shell-
and-tube exchanger having 128 tubes in a 15.25-in ID shell. There are two passes on the
shell side and four passes on the tube side. The baffles are 20% cut segmental type and
are spaced at 4.5in intervals. Take the specific heats of alcohol is 0.7 Btu/(lb-°F) and
orthoxylene is 0.43 Btu/(lb-°F). The exchanger has 18ft steel tubes with 0.75in O.D. and
0.62in I.D. The tubes are on a 1 in square pitch. The thermal conductivity of stainless
steel is 25.9 Btu/(ft-hr-°F). The alcohol will flow though the tube. Estimate:

Evidence 1
a) The heat load for the heat exchanger (30 points)
b) The ∆TLMTD and correction factor (40 points)
c) Area of the heat exchanger (30 points)

Evidence 2
d) The overall heat transfer coefficient required (20 points)
e) The overall heat transfer coefficient clean (40 points)
f) The overall heat transfer coefficient fouling (20 points)
g) Will the exchanger be thermally suitable for this service? (20 points)

1. Ehylene glycol 13 000 lb/hr and 200°F is cooled at 110°F with cooling ethyl benzene
heated from 77°F at 110°F in a shell and tube heat exchanger. Available for this duty is a
shell-and-tube exchanger having 204 tubes in a 19.25-in ID shell. There are two passes on
the shell side and four passes on the tube side. The baffles are 20% cut segmental type
and are spaced at 4.5in intervals. Take the specific heats of ethylene glycol is 0.63Btu/(lb-
°F) and ethyl benzene is 0.41 Btu/(lb-°F). The exchanger has 18ft steel tubes with 0.75in
