Chapter 3 – Water O Water

Summary of the Chapter

 This chapter introduces us to the water. Water is an essential part of our life.
 Water helps us to lead a comfortable life on this planet. We use water for
drinking, making food, bathing, washing clothes and many more daily.

Where we find water

Natural Resources

 Sea: a sea is defined as a portion of the ocean that is partly surrounded by


land.
 River: A river is natural flowing water, usually freshwater, flowing towards
an ocean, sea, lake or another river.
 Lake: a large area of water surrounded by land.
 Pond: a small body of still water formed naturally or
artificially.
 Groundwater: Groundwater is the water found underground in the cracks
and spaces in soil, sand and rock

Artificial Resources

 Well: A well is an excavation or structure created in the ground by digging,


driving, or drilling to access liquid resources, usually water.
 Canals: an artificial waterway constructed to allow the passage of boats or
ships inland or to convey water for irrigation.
 Dams: A dam is a barrier that stops or restricts surface water flow or
underground streams. It has an attached reservoir to store the excess water.
 Tube Wells: A tube well is a form of a water well in which a stainless steel
tube or pipe, 100–200 millimetres in diameter, is dug
underground.

Where we use water

 Drinking: Fresh water from the river or filtered wanted is used for drinking.
 Preparing food: Again, freshwater from the river and artificial reservoirs are
used for preparing food.
 Bathing: Water is used for cleaning and bathing purposes too.
 Washing clothes: Water is used for washing off the dirty clothes
 Washing utensils: All the utensils are washed off with the help of water only.

 Water on this earth is in different forms, such as liquid (sea, pond), solid (snow
or glaciers) and gas (water vapour).
 Water creates life on the earth.
 When water gets uncontrolled, it turns into a flood, creating misfortunate in
our life.

Solved Examples:

Q 1. You read the poem about rivers, waterfalls, lakes, and springs. Where do
you get water? Put around those places that are either in your house or around
it.
Ans: lake, well, tube well, pond, waterfall, hand pump, river, stream, tap, tank
(Tanka), sea, hot water spring.

Q2. Why do we need to store water?


Ans: Water is kept to be used when the water supply is interrupted.

Practice Question:

Q 1. Do you have to go far to get water? How much time does it take to bring
the water?
Ans: Water comes to my home through pipelines. So we do not need to go far to get
water.’ Sometimes, during summers we need to call the water tanker. I have heard
that in some villages people need to go several miles to get water.

Q 2. Mention some ways to save water at home.

Ans: Few ways to save water at home are:
 Turn off the faucet while brushing your teeth.
 Only run the washing machine and dishwasher when you have a full load.
 Use a low flow shower head and faucet aerators.
 Fix leaks.
 Install a dual flush or low flow toilet or put a conversion kit on your existing
toilet.
 Don’t overwater your lawn or water during peak periods, and install rain
sensors on irrigation systems.
 Install a rain barrel for outdoor watering.
 Plant a rain garden for catching stormwater runoff from your roof, driveway,
and other hard surfaces.
