The vast majority of industrialized countries have strict firearm regulations. For example, Japan places
restrictions on the possession and use of all firearms except in limited instances (such as hunting,
athletic events, and research). Canada permits the possession and use of firearms for competitions and
target practice, but it forbids the possession of handguns unless an individual can show that a handgun is
needed for self-defense. Meanwhile, Germany permits the ownership of certain firearms so long as the
requirements for a firearms ownership license (which include that the applicant is aged 18 or older, has
expert knowledge in firearm handling, and has the necessity to possess such firearms) are satisfied.

The United States is one of only three countries that protects the constitutional right to keep and bear
arms. Despite accounting for less than 5 percent of the world's population, the U.S. contains 46% of
civilian-owned guns worldwide. In recent years, several mass shootings and a sustained rise in gun
violence across the United States have spurred law enforcement officials and lawmakers to push for
more gun control measures. In June, President Joe Biden signed into law the first major gun safety
legislation passed in decades; while the measure fails to ban any weapons, it includes funding for school
safety and state crisis intervention programs. Many states — including California, Delaware, and New
York — have also passed new laws to help curb gun violence, such as regulating untraceable ghost guns
and strengthening background check systems. However, the solution of increased gun control remains
hotly contested across the United States, with debate often centering on whether or not regulations on
an individual’s right to arms are an undue restriction on liberty.

There were 572,537 total gun deaths between
1999 and 2016; guns were the leading cause of
death by homicide (67.7% of all homicides) and
by suicide (51.8% of all suicides).

violence
Over 100,000 people sustain firearm injuries in
the United States each year; consequent
emergency room and hospital charges amount to
just under $3 billion. According to the World
Health Organization (WHO), the costs of gun
violence can include legal services, medical costs,
perpetrator control, policing, incarceration, foster
care, and private security.
Gun control laws infringe upon the right to
self-defense and deny people a sense of safety
According to the National Rifle Association (NRA),
guns are used for justified self-defense 2.5 million
times a year. Nelson Lund, Professor at George
Mason University School of Law, stated, “Many
[gun control laws] interfere with the ability of
law-abiding citizens to defend themselves.”
Gun control laws cannot prevent criminals from
obtaining guns
A Secret Service analysis found that of 24 mass
shootings in 2019, at least 10 involved illegally
possessed guns. John R. Lott, Jr., PhD, gun rights
activist, stated, “The problem [with gun control
laws] is that they take away guns from
law-abiding citizens, while criminals ignore them.”

Recently, gun control has been a very
controversial topic, many individuals are
undetermined whether or not guns should be
allowed. Gun control may vary in the different
usages as it is unrestricted in any scenario, leaving
the choice of usage to its property owner. I
strongly disagree that we should install any gun
control laws as it's one of the only ways of
defense in such a society. Guns are hostile but are
only hostile when they're not used properly. Over
the past year, guns were used as self -defense
more than 2.5 million times, showing how having
a weapon could protect you from any threats. If
we were to implement gun control laws, it just
wouldn't work. In an analysis in 2019, 10 out of
24 cases of mass shooting were involved through
illegally possessing a gun, thus proving the point
that guns should not be restricted for any “safety
measurements. ”

Amanda (For Speech):
Gun control has always been an extremely
controversial topic among US citizens. Some
believe that firearms are an important tool for
self defense against those who are aggressive
while some believe that getting rid of firearms
altogether is the safer option. I strongly agree
with installing gun control laws in the US because
of the large number of citizens getting attacked.
Innocent civilians are unable to avoid shootings
even in areas which are meant to be safe.
Students feel uncomfortable and scared in
schools, worrying that those around them could
be a potential threat, affecting their mindsets and
learning experience. Not only this but installing
gun control laws will ensure lesser deaths and a
better reputation. Criminals will be unable to
attack unless with a gun permit and those who
decide to use the weapons illegally will be even
more dangerous. Some may argue that guns can
serve as a self defense tool but there are a variety
other options you are able to choose from.
