GENERAL CHEMISTRY
TUTORIAL 6: THE GASES STATE

1. The pressure of a gas sample was measured to be 654 mmHg. What is the pressure in kPa?

2. A sample of a gas occupies 1.40 ×103 mL at 25°C and 760 mmHg. What volume will it occupy at the
same temperature and 380 mmHg?

3. A sample of nitrogen gas has a volume of 32.4 L at 20°C. The gas is heated to 220°C at constant
pressure. What is the final volume of nitrogen?

4. Calculate the number of moles of gas contained in a 10.0 L tank at 22°C and 105 atm.
(R = 0.08206 L.atm/K.mol)

5. A 1.2 L flask contains 0.500 mole of ammonia (NH3) at 150°C. Calculate the pressure of the ammonia
inside the flask.

6. Carry out the following conversion of pressure units

a) 0.947 atm to mmHg

b) 98.2 kPa to torr
c) 768 torr to atm

7. What is the pressure in kPa and atmosphere, if a force of 1.00 x10 2 N is exerted on an area of 5.00
cm2?

8. A sample of gas at 15oC and 1 atm has a volume of 2.58 L. What volume will this gas occupy at 38oC?

9. A sample of carbon monoxide gas occupies 3.20 L at 125 oC. Calculate the temperature at which this
gas will occupy 1.54 L if the pressure remains constant?

10. A balloon indoors, where the temperature is 27 oC, has a volume of 2.00 L. What will its volume be
outdoors, where the temperature is –23oC is the pressure remains constant?

11. Consider a balloon with a volume of 22.4 L at 273 K. What will be the new volume if the temperature
increases to 298 K?

12. A 12.2 L sample containing 0.50 mol of oxygen gas, O 2 at a pressure of 1 atm and a temperature of
25oC. If all these oxygen gas were converted to ozone, O 3 at the same temperature and pressure, what
would be the volume of the ozone?

13. A small bubble rises from the bottom of a lake, where the temperature and pressure are 8 oC and 6.4
atm, to the water’s surface, where the temperature is 25 oC and the pressure is 1 atm. Calculate the final
volume (in mL) of the bubble if its initial volume was 2.1 mL?

14. Nitric acid a very important industrial chemical, is made by dissolving the gas nitrogen dioxide, NO 2,
in water. Calculate the density of NO2 gas, in g / L, at 1.24 atm and 50oC?

15. Calculate the density of carbon dioxide, CO2 in grams per liter (g/L) at 0.990 atm and 55oC?
16. A 0.109 g sample of a pure gaseous compound occupies 112 mL at 100 oC and 750 torr. What is the
molecular weight of the compound?

17. The density of a gas at 25 oC and 103 kPa is 0.00136 gcm -3. Calculate the relative molecular mass of
the gas.

18. Calculate the volume of O2 (in liters) required for the complete combustion of 7.64L of acetylene
(C2H2) measured at the same temperature and pressure 2C2H2 (g) + 5O2 (g) 4CO2 (g) + 2H2O (l)

19. Calculate the volume O2 (in L) at STP required for the complete combustion of 14.9L of butane(C 4H10)
at STP 2C4H10(g) + 13O2(g) 8CO2(g) + 10H2O(g)

20. 10 L flask contains 1.031 g O 2 and 0.572 g CO2 at 18oC. What are the partial pressure of oxygen and
CO2? What is the total pressure?

21. Given that 3.50 moles of NH3 occupy 5.20 L at 47oC, calculate the pressure of the gas (in atm) using
