sentences?”
(Solicit answers from the students)
Then, ask them to provide the appropriate word to
make each sentence correct.

C. Discussion of Concepts (Explore)

Let the students correct the grammatical errors in

activity. Let the students arrange the scrambled
letters to form the right word. (Clue: These words
are the types of Definitions.)
a) AFOMRL – FORMAL
b) LMROFANI – INFORMAL
c) DXTENDEE – EXTENDED

Then going back to the previous sentences with

grammatical errors, let them guess to what type of
definition each sentence belongs.

D. Developing Mastery (Explain)

Explain the concept to the students.

How important is grammar in making
definitions?

Grammar is the study of the way words are

used to make sentences. It explains the forms of
structure of words (called morphology) and how
they are arranged in sentences (called syntax). In
other words, grammar provides the rules for
common use of both spoken and written language
so we can more easily understand each other. It
helps in making the structure precise, clear, and
accurate. Eliminate grammatical errors in making a
definition and reward your readers with clear
communication.

 What are the three types of

definition?
When writers are trying to explain
an unfamiliar idea, they rely on definitions.
All definitions attempt to explain or clarify a
term. There are three types of definition:
Formal, Informal and Extended.

1. Formal definition is something that

follows rules, correct grammar and
has three parts; the term, the class
and distinguishing characteristics.

Example: A doctor is a person who is

responsible in healing the sick.

2. Informal definition is more casual and

spontaneous, the writer uses known
words or examples to explain the
unknown term. These definitions may
be synonyms or antonyms introduced
by or, in other words, or like. It could
also be stipulation, analogy, or
illustrations.

Example: Freedom also referred to

as liberty or independence, is a state
people reach when they are free to
think and do whatever they please.

3. Extended definitions generally have

components of both formal and
informal definitions. However, as the
name suggests, the author uses a
number of other techniques to define
a word, concept, or phrase.

Example: Uniform Resources Locator,

commonly called a URL, is an
addressing system which is used to
identify sites on the internet. A URL
consists of four separate parts that
together define the location of any
file. The parts are the protocol,
domain name, path, and filename.

Note: The underlined sentences are

the extended definitions.

E. Application and Generalization (Elaborate)

Applying what they have learned, let the students
do the following tasks.
A. Define these terms observing correct
grammar and using the three types in
making definitions.
1.) Home
2.) Internet
B. Using this picture, define the word mother
using the three types of definitions.

F. Evaluation
Present this assessment task. Let the students
assess what they have learned.
Directions: Read and analyze the
questions. Choose the best answer in each
item. Use a separate sheet.

1. The kind of definition that consists of three

2. The writer uses known words or examples
to explain an unknown terms. These definitions
may be synonyms or antonyms.

3. Generally, this definition has components
of the two types. The author uses a number of
other techniques to define a word, concept, or
phrase.
