1. Why did Shivaji Maharaj decided to attack Surat?
Ans. Shivaji Maharaj decided to attack Surat because: i. It was necessary to make the losses incurred due to ravaging of the territory of the swaraj by Shaistakhan for three years. ii. Surat was a big trade centre, port and rich city of the Mughals. iii. The British, the Dutch and the French had their factories in Surat. iv. Shivaji Maharaj thought an attack on Surat would be a good lesson to the Mughals.
2. How did Shivaji Maharaj escape from Agra?
Ans. i. Shivaji Maharaj agreed to visit Agra along with Sambhaji Maharaj and few trusted people on the guarantee of safety given by Jaisingh. ii. Aurangzeb did not treat Shivaji Maharaj well which enraged him. iii. The Emperor then put him under house arrest. iv. Shivaji cleverly escaped Agra and reached Maharashtra safely. v. He had left prince Sambhaji at Mathura who was also brought safely to Rajgad.
II. Give reasons.
1. Shivaji Maharaj got himself coronated.
Ans. i. Swaraj was found after relentless struggle for over thirty years. ii. It was necessary for the swaraj to gain general recognition as a sovereign independent state. iii. A formal coronation was necessary for such recognition. Therefore, Shivaji Maharaj got himself coronated on June, 1674.
2. Shivaji Maharaj entered into the treaty of Purandar.
Ans. i. The huge army of Dilerkhan had ravaged the territory of swaraj. ii. Murarbhaji Deshpande died a hero’s death while defending Purandar. iii. His subjects suffered great losses due to conflict with the Mughals. iv. Considering the seriousness of the situation, Shivaji Maharaj entered into the Treaty of Purandar.
