Life and Works of Rizal

Final Assessment, #027

1. Dapitan was chosen as the place of exile because it is under the missionary jurisdiction of the Jesuits (an
apostolic religion and a community called the Society of Jesus). Since Rizal is known to be an anti-
Catholic, he was sent away to Dapitan in hope that the Jesuits could convince him to turn away from his
beliefs and ideas and let go of his “Shipwreck of Faith”.

2. Rizal is one of the most revered people in Philippine history. He was a well-respected multifaceted
intellectual and political activist, best known for his political writings that targeted Spanish colonialism
and governance in the country. The role of Rizal in fighting for Philippine independence, was him
inspiring the start of the Philippine Revolution through his writings that stirred up the patriotic feelings
of his fellow Filipinos which ignited the fire and started the revolution through the members of the
Katipunan who looked up to Rizal.

3. The events and experiences Rizal encountered during his final journey in Europe helped him shape his
perspectives on colonialism, nationalism and independence. His meetings with some Filipino expatriates
and intellectuals in Paris, Madrid and Brussels exposed hum to a diverse range of views on nationalism
and he realized the Philippine's struggle for independence. Upon his stay in Europe, Rizal also witnessed
the struggle of other colonized people such as the Irish and Cubans who were fighting for independence,
this led him to see the much wider implications of colonialism and the need for a united front to fight
against colonial oppression.

4. Dr. Jose Rizal has been engaged in multiple relationships all throughout his lifetime. Josephine Bracken,
Gertrude Beckett and his greatest love Leonor Rivera were a few among those ladies he's been with.

The historians and academics have studied and analyzed his relationships to better understand his life
and character. His love affairs are regarded as relevant because they offer insight into his private life and
emotional state. Also, his relationships were also impacted by the political and social climate during his
time making his relationships more complex than the usual and simple love affairs.
Rizal's romantic relationships are significant in his biography and allows us to have a better
understanding and comprehension of his life and his impact on our nation and society.
