ACTIVITY 2: READ LIKE A PHILOSOPHER

STAGE ACTIVITY

Explication In the first section, author Viktor Frankl describes his experiences in Nazi concentration camps
during World War II. He explores the psychological and emotional difficulties the prisoners faced
and explains how their search for meaning became critical to their survival. Frankl emphasizes the
idea that even in the most horrifying and cruel situations, people can choose their attitude and find
meaning from their suffering. He believes that people's basic need is to find meaning in their lives
and that by identifying and pursuing what is important to them, they can achieve fulfillment and
meaning in life.

Frankl speaks about the importance of accepting suffering as part of human existence,
emphasizing the life-changing ability to find meaning in even the most difficult situations. Viktor
Frankl's thesis states that humanity must change its approach to achieving meaning in life:
meaning comes not from what humans expect from life but from what life expects from them. Viktor
Frankl argues that people are primarily motivated by the desire to understand the meaning of their
lives and that this search can lead to fulfillment even in times of extreme suffering and
unhappiness. He also argues that individuals have the freedom to choose their attitude in any
situation,regardless of external conditions.
Elucidation When Viktor Frankl uses the term "elucidation," he is highlighting the transforming potential of
finding purpose in life—especially in the face of suffering. He emphasizes that seeking meaning is
more than just a theoretical desire; it offers tangible emotional advantages such as a sense of
purpose and inner calm. According to Frankl, those who build a unique sense of purpose are better
prepared to face life's obstacles because it provides them with inner strength and resilience. This
concept is strongly related to the theory of freedom of choice, as Frankl believes that humans have
the authority to select how they view and react to conditions, particularly the decision to seek
meaning in anything challenging.

Viktor Frankl's profound ideas, as articulated in "Man's Search for Meaning," correlate strongly
with today's issues and dynamics. In a society dominated by digital connections, where people
may experience feelings of isolation and detachment. In light of the current mental health
perspective, his teachings provide a significant framework for treating modern difficulties such as
anxiety and existential suffering, while also supporting a holistic approach to a healthy lifestyle. The
prevalence of technological devices emphasizes the necessity of mindfulness, with Frankl's
teachings advocating for purposeful and conscious use of technology to allow for introspective and
meaningful interactions. In essence, Frankl's enduring philosophy serves as an in-depth guide for
navigating the complexity of modern life, providing significant insights into the pursuit of purpose,
mental well-being, adaptation, and a balanced attitude to the difficulties that we face today.
Frankl's views hold immense relevance for individuals in any era. For each person, Frankl's
ideas make us think about the choices we make when life gets hard. He says we have the
freedom to decide how we see and react to things, and this can make us feel powerful. His
emphasis on finding meaning in our experiences, doing something valuable for others, and
staying positive connects with what we all want - a meaningful and purposeful life.

In my own life, Frankl's way of thinking makes me reflect on how I deal with challenges.
Knowing that I can find meaning even in tough times gives me hope and influences how I face
difficulties. It makes me value having a purpose in life.

Evaluation In my view, Viktor Frankl is right because he says having a clear purpose in life, especially
when things are tough, can really change how we feel. It's not just a fancy idea; it actually gives us
a sense of purpose and makes us feel calm inside. Frankl also makes sense when he talks about
our freedom to choose how we see and react to tough situations, especially when deciding to find
meaning in challenges. His ideas make sense and seem helpful in dealing with life's ups and
downs.

I agree with Viktor Frankl's position in "Man's Search for Meaning." His emphasis on finding
purpose in life, especially amid suffering, resonates deeply with the human experience. I find his
argument about the transformative power of purpose to be profoundly true. In today's fast and
connected world, where many feel alone, Frankl's teachings are important. He warns about the
need for significance in human lives. This is crucial for mental well-being and a healthy lifestyle.

Frankl's idea about accepting suffering and finding meaning in hard times is persuasive. He
says facing difficulties can make us grow and become stronger. The idea that life's meaning
comes from what life expects from us, not just what we expect,is deep. He also believes we
have the freedom to choose our attitude, even in tough situations. In simple terms, Frankl's
ideas encourage a positive and purposeful life outlook.

I affirm that a person can only respond to life, by being responsible. Viktor Frankl
emphasizes the need for people to take responsibility for their actions and the consequences
that follow, which is in line with the belief that people should be held accountable for their
decisions. The concept of utilizing difficulties as a means to discover a significant life purpose
can be particularly reassuring when faced with extremely difficult circumstances, like the
concentration camps that Viktor Frankl underwent. For a personal experience, the decision to
move to Baguio reflects a sense of responsibility for personal growth, demonstrating an
approach to facing challenges and preventing fear from hindering progress.
